create restore disk for inspiron B130

Hello,

I would like to create a physical restore disk for my B130 (before it is too late).  After much Googling, the only helps I could find were these:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4841223_recovery-disk-dell-inspiron-b.html?ref=Track2&utm_source=ask

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_62A668E1C399857AE040AE0AB8E12942&isLegacy=true

In the first case, I do not find "Dell OS Recovery CD" (or anything like it) under "All Programs" > "Dell Accessories".  Also looked in other categories beginning with "Dell".

In the second case, I do not find "Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0" in "All Programs".

Can someone tell me if there are other options to do this?

Barring a simpler solution, I am also willing to try to create a disk image of the partition it is on, and burn that to disk, if it is possible to boot off of it, and do a restore that way, if someone thinks that would work.  I have Linux on another partition on this computer.

Any meaningful input at all would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Allasso

This system is far too old to have come with a restore-disc option.  There is a Symantec Ghost boot disc option on the drive - however, to use it without the boot sector that ships with the system, you'll need a licensed copy of Symantec Ghost.

You cannot make a backup disc from this system.  And yes, if you install Linux, it will destroy the quick-restore boot loader.

The option to make your own media for restore came along with Windows Vista and 7  -- it wasn't offered with XP.

If you need a Windows disc, see

So how would I use that to create a backup disk?  Are you saying that because I put Linux on (and thus grub bootloader) that the boot sector for Windows is no longer present?  The restore sector is still present on the computer.

Thank you kindly.  I ordered the disk.

Can the boot loader be restored by rewriting the master boot record, eg, FDISK /MBR, or fixmbr from the repair disk?

A standard boot sector can be rewritten, yes -- but not the one that invokes the Ghost recovery partition.
