inspiron 1501 memory

I have googled for answer to this Q and get conflicting answers.

Officially 1501 will support 1g memory chip in each slot. Total 2g.

unofficially I have heard that it will support a 2g chip in each slot. Total 4g

Does anyone know the definitive answer?

Thanx

This is the information that  I have on the Inspiron 1501 and system memory.

Memory module connectors Two SODIMM connectors

Memory module capacities 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB

Memory type 1.8-V SODIMM DDR-2

Minimum memory 256 MB

Maximum memory 2 GB

So dimms larger then 2GB may work, but it hasn't been tested by Dell and it wouldn't be something that tech support would be able to help out with.
