inspiron 8600

purchased 2004 with 512MB of ram  processor 1.6

using 19.3 of 52GB capacity.

I remove cache every so often and defrag every so often.

I'm thinking after calling Dell Support to upgrade to 2GB ram.

I use firefox, thunderbird, windows movie maker, photoshop and expression web.

Will speed increase be more noticeable if instead upgrade to 1GB or for difference go for 2GB?

Oh and why is Dell not offering a 2GB upgrade for around $75.00 with shipping?

Thanks.

The more RAM the better especially if you multitask. RAM is so cheap now I would go with the 2 GB of RAM. I would buy from www.crucial.com  where they gaurantee their memory to work with you computer.

I ordered 2 x 1GB memory cards.

From what I've been reading speed should increase however I kind of like with my broadband speed test like to know from where it is today at 512 to what it will be when cards are installed.

Is there a computer speed test or gauge to test memory speed?

Like I could put one 1GB card in replacing only one 246meg  and see speed.  then take out other 256 and install other 1GB card for total of 2.

I found something called CPU-Z

http://download.cnet.com/CPU-Z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html

So I download it run *.exe file and it tells me a lot however if I run it again after both 1GB's are installed what number from current test should I write down to see if it goes up and to what?

thanks
