inspiron mini 10v touchpad icon on taskbar

i was messing around with the icons on the taskbar when i accidentally removed the dell touchpad icon. I tried going to the taskbar properties window, clicking customize, and using the "customize notifications" window to put the icon back on the taskbar, but changing the icon's behavior to "always show" didn't change anything; it still remained under the list of past items. how do i put icons on the taskbar?
