install SSD in E6420

I wan´t to change my HDD with a new SSD. I set the SATA Mode AHCI but the SSD is not recognized. Only in RAID Mode the SSD is identified correctly. Now I can install Windows 7 but after Reboot I get a Read/Write error - booting from SSD is not possible.

What I´m doing wrong? Any advice?

Hi tahrens,

Request you to follow below steps:

(1) Change the settings to the earlier settings in BIOS

(2) Insert the old hard drive and boot to windows.

(3) Disable acceleration using IRST by following below steps:

(i) Run the Intel RST software through the All Programs menu or the task bar icon

(ii) Click Disable acceleration under either the Status or Accelerate menu. (4) Now restart the computer, keep tapping F2 key at the Dell logo

(5) Bios menu appears now change the SATA mode to AHCI.

Let us know about the progress.

Hi Kiran,

tx for the reply.

My original SATA setting in BIOS was AHCI. So why is it that the SSD is not recognized? Should it not identified automatically. Others wrote that they changed the HDD against the SSD and thats it, no other thinks to do.

Hi tahrens,

Sometimes the BIOS needs native command queue which improves the performance of an SSD.

You may also want to use the below link to update drivers:

Do follow the steps given by me in the above post.

Hi Kiran,

solved my issue. I disabled the Sata Drives 4 und 5 in BIOS. Now the SSD is discovered as primary drive and OS starts correctly. But not even each time, sometime I have to start my Laptop 10 times, more or less.

Hi tahrens,

I suggest you to reinstall the Operating system on the msata drive as you were thinking of doing it before. I also recommend you to do it on an msata drive which is more than 32GB so that the performance of the computer will be reduced..
