portable with true serial port db9?
hi all,
I'm looking for a new notebook (as replacement for a disintergrating inspiron 3800) with as only firm requirement: a _true_ hardware serial port db9 listening on com1.
I read (here I think) some of the laptops that still have a serial port, use in fact an internal USB to DB9 converter.
That won't do. I have another notebook and an external usb>db9 converter. while an application sees the com-port (although not on com1), communication does not work.
Thanks
glenn

have you considered a pcmcia card with a serial port?

thanks for your reply.
the problem with pcmcia (as with the usb converter) is I cannot get it to listen on com1. those seem reserved by the system eventhough there are no com-ports.
As com1 is hardcoded in the datalogger system and there is no update in sight, this won't work for me.
some of the business type class notebooks from hp,toshiba still have a com1 port, but they are not suited for the job. It is to be used in a workshop and on the road. on average, my laptops put up with it for about 1 to 2 years max and then fall apart.
so an 2000euro notebook just for the comport is too expensive.
