spdif out on inspiron 9100?

Hi Niall,

You should have received an adapter with your i9100.
This adapter plugs into the S-video/tv-out port at the back of the i9100.
It then has three output options: S-video, Composite video and Digital audio. The last one is SPDIF.
The Delll part number (from the bag) is: DP/N 070TVD, on the adapter itself is states DP/N 044CTV|C/O.

Also you must setup your soundcard to output SPDIF signals. You then need a analog cable to connect it to your audio/multimedia system. There is no optical output.

More information you can find on page 61 of the owners manual of the i9100 (you can download the manual also from the download section of the Dell site).

No, there is not a SPDIF connection on the Inspiron 9100 / XPS.

I don't know where you got your info, but SPDIF works like a champ on XPS and the 9100.

Niall,

The same adaptor that worked for the 8200 should also work on the 9100.  However, as Wolf pointed out, you should have recieved one with the system.

mine came with the connector for s video, rca video, and digital out (via rca jack), I haven't tried it yet since I don't have any digital received, but I think it's ok.

 

Just curious what type of devices you are plugging the SPDIF outs of the laptop into?

I know I tried to use an inexpensive SPDIF In/Out USB audio adapter with our HP laptop, and when plugging it into our digital mixer, we didn't have a good clock-sync, and therefore we had audio spikes/dropouts. The laptop would have to have some sort of word clock generation to function as a clock master for this to work.

But I'm not too familiar with hooking it up to consumer-oriented devices (home stereos). Maybe it works OK with these.

We are thinking of getting a 9100 and will use it for audio recording and playback. Would love to have a SPDIF IN for recording, but it doesn't sound like this is possible, is it??

I looked at what ports were available for this computer and did not see a SPDIF port.  Had I looked closer, I would have found that a SPDIF connector included with this system.
