Run the Dell diagnostics - which include a keyboard diagnostic. F12 at powerup.

Did you find out what the solution to this? The SAME thing is happening to me. They have replaced the hard drive, keyboard and palm rest and the problem still exists. The service tech who came out said that he had never heard of this problem before.

I am having a similar problem but it is as if the ctrl key is being held down intermittently. I get shortcut dialog boxes popping up--for instance when I type a "s" the save as box comes up. I am on my third studio1737 and they all do it. I reported this problem 6 days after I got my computer and Dell says they won't give me my money back and it is a problem I don't think I can live with the problem.

I am having the exact same problem, but with a studio 1537. I have to use an external keyboard because the problem is so annoying. Paragraphs get deleted, windows pop up...it's driving me crazy. Dell told me to reinstall Windows, but I doubt that will help. I wish one of the Dell moderators would come to this thread and give us some insight, because we sure aren't getting answers elsewhere. I am never buying a Dell again, I have had more problems with this computer since I bought it!

I was having somewhat of this issue whilst typing. I figured out it's because
the meat of your hands rest in the corners of the touch pad. Only way I get
around it is type carefully when I use the touch pad, or setup the pad to turn
off when a USB or other type of mouse i detected. Haven't had problems
since.

I too am having the same problem in original post. Have only had the laptop for a week! Was on the phone w/ tech support last night for almost 2 hours. They reformatted my machine, but the problem still exists. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm in email, chat or a document. Does anyone know if reseating the keyboard will resolve this problem? Or even replacing the keyboard?

I have had the keyboard replaced twice and it did not fix the problem--I am beginning to think that it has something to do with the touchpad. You would think Dell would figure that out. I have had 2 replacement computers with the same problem. I did go into the touchpad settings and changed the touchcheck to maximum and it seems to have helped but you would think Dell would figure this out.

Okay, so I took the advice of someone else on another thread, and got an external mouse...the Dell/Logitech one actually. I plugged it in and changed the mouse settings to disable the touchpad when an external USB mouse is plugged in, and the problems seems to have been fixed! So I'd give that a try guys! And thanks for the info, goingtobuyamac. Annndd yes, you'd think Dell would figure this out instead of replacing parts and telling us to reinstall Windows!

I finally have my issues solved! Dell had sent another Studio 1737, which had the exact same problems. The rep that I had been dealing with at Dell passed me off to someone else. This man is a miracle worker! He logged onto my system. I watched as he downloaded a bunch of updates (bios, keyboard and touch pad). It took about 45 minutes. I have had NO PROBLEMS since! That was 4 days ago.
Also we adjusted the touchpad settings, which made a huge difference. On the very left side of the touch pad, if you go up, it increases in size, down, decreases... Didn't know that...So that was my operator error. I turned that off. I have no problems resting the bottoms of my hands on the keyboard - the palm rest.
I told him about this form and that he should check it out.

How do you adjust the touchpad settings?

Also---I had googled this problem on the internet and someone suggested changing the Touchcheck settings to Maximum and that seemed to help the problem.

ccstann,
To adjust your touchpad settings, double click on the little touchpad near the clock.
Driver Select, I did NOT touch.
Scrolling, I have the top box only checked, normal and ssrolling speed is not at slow but the next line.
Touchpad settings are...
Touchpad speed 6th line
Touch Sensitivity is 4th line
Taps, both boxes checked and middle setting
Touch Check Middle setting
External mouse settings I did not change.
Hope these setting work for you as good as they work for me.
Rick
