xps m1710 power supply

Smoke poured from the back of my xps m1710 the other morning and likely my power supply (internal) died. Dell has no replacement parts. Is it a good gamble to try to find a replacement (say on ebay) or did it possibly take the motherboard or other components with it?

If the power adapter is faulty, its LED won't come on.  If it does, then there's a good chance the fault is internal, not with the power supply.  From what you've described, the mainboard is almost certainly fried.  There is no "internal power supply" that's separate from the mainboard.
