Dell Inspiron 9100 with Intel Pentium 4 2.8E PRESCOTT processor?
I just took receipt of my new Dell Inspiron 9100 notebook. It has a 2.8Ghz CPU. In bios it said that the cpu has 1024KB cache- initially I did not pay too much attention to that, but then I found out that this puppy can crunch two seti units in 2:24, which rivals my precott 3.0 system. I then reviewed the Intel specs and indeed there is no 2.8GHz noteboook processor listed - in fact the only processor with 2.8GHz and 1MB RAM is the prescott 2.8E. Well I then downloaded the intel processor spec utility - and lo and behold it identifies the processor as a 2.8E with 1MB cache.
The system is stable and seemingly fast (with 1GB of ram) but it gets loud when crunching and the battery life is only about 1:40. Not sure if want to keep it as it's also big as a tank but I may have a genuine oddball system at my hands here.
Has anyone else here received such a system?

this Labtop is a "DESKTOP REPLACMENT" of course it will be louder then a normal labtop it also will have way lower battery life? what do you and all the other people complaining about this stuff think a desktop replacment will be like?
i am waiting for my 9100 to come and i expect it to be grand.

this thing is hot... it idles at 53-55 with the fans on low. Does anyone know how this heat will affect the life of the processor, especially when leaving it on all the time. I want to have this computer for at least 2-3 years, but if its this how when its brand new, im a little worried

Where did you hear that all 9100s ship with a prescott? Dell's website lists it with a northwood. This comes as a surprise to me also, given that Dell are reluctant to use presecotts in their desktop machines (even though I scored one of those early rare 8300s that had one :))
Regarding size and noise this system is definitely not a laptop or notebook and I am glad that Dell has their 30 day satisfaction guarantee, because unless you can see and try this thing out there is no way to tell how huge it is.
Noise is actually low to moderate at normal desktop work, but when gaming or crunching the fans kick in.

There is an easy way to tell what proc is installed.
In BIOS, if the proc says 512 cache, it's a Northwood. If it says 1024, it's a Prescott. If it says 2048, it's a Northwood EE.
The 9100 was supposed to ship with prescotts, but it seems that Intel has been having trouble producing them. No computer manufacturer seems to be getting them, so Northwoods are used in replacement. Yomama, it seems you got a fairly rare Prescott.

Forgot to mention, for those that are thrilled with your Prescott's, may be you would not be quite so happy if you knew that Prescott is slower than Northwood at the same clock speeds. Not on all benchmarks and not by much, but still. :(

I don't know if it is rare or not, but my 2.8 GHz is also a Prescott (1024kb cache). Not that I really care, but wouldn't that make Dell's specifications false advertising? Nowhere in the specs do they mention Prescott.

This notebook was fast but too heavy, too bulky, too little battery life (about 1:20 with the 96WHr battery - under 1 hour crunching SETI), and no good docking solution make it no good for me.

wow... ditto to what Yomama12 said.
i had the 9100 for 3 weeks (before i returned it), and i realized it was trying to talk myself into liking that oaf just cus of the great price. Also, i had the Prescott, and IT IS NOT GOOD... techies are calling it Intel's Blunder, and it gets soooo hot. Anyway, the new centrino (code named Dothan) is out, so im hoping to get that soon.
