Dell Studio 1737 - how to remove bios password
Hi,
One of my customers said that some of her friends were using the laptop and now it has a bios password on it and she doesn't know what the password is and they don't know either. I looked in the manuals and don't see a way to reset it so I took off the bottom panel, removed the battery for a while, put it back in and now you can boot up without it asking for the bios password but if you try to get into the bios it asks for a password. When I first booted I saw it had reset the bios so I figure that will clear out any password.
I know I've fixed desktops like this before by either switching a jumper or removing the battery. I didn't see any jumpers listed for this in the manual.
Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Only way is for the registered owner to call Dell, and upon proof of ownership and payment of $50 for the support call, they'll assist the owner -- that person must be prepared to prove ownership.

Well, the computer is still under warranty so I'd think this would be free. I'll have the owner do that. I just thought there would be an easier way then going through the hassle of calling.

The Dell requirement for the registered owner was instituted on laptops because of the large number that have been stolen.

A. By Using the Motherboard Jumper:
In most motherboards CMOS battery is soldered, which makes it difficult to remove the battery. In this case we use another method.
Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.
When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.
Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.
B. By Using Software:

iF YOU HAVE A DELL INSPIRON BUILT IN 2005 OR BEFORE AND HAVE THE WHITE SCREEN THAT REQUESTS A PASSWORD, I CAN HELP GET THE BIOS PASSWORD IF YOU SEND ME AN EMAIL . I do check and respond daily
