How can I tell which CPU I have without power?

Question

I have a 783KV motherboard and I thought I had a 750MHz CPU, but now in doing the research I see a 650MHz and 850MHz. So now I'm not so sure which one I had. The laptop won't power up and I've already replaced the motherboard with a good one. The lights power up for a couple of seconds but the HD doesn't spin and it powers back off. So I'm going to try the CPU next. My previous thread was removed because it had my service tag. Is this a new policy that I can't post them up or what? Because I've done so before and somebody broke down my hardware profile that way and told me what I had.   If I do in fact have a 750MHz, could I use a 500, 650, and 850 too?

On my Pentium M's, the speed is stamped on it. If you can take the heatsink off, it might be on there.

I was swapping CPUs on my M70 and D610 while back; the CPU on the M70 wasn't in properly (it wasn't tightened all the way). It powered up for a second, then turned off. The LEDs came on (Bluetooth, Num Lock/Caps Lock/Scroll Lock). I wasn't paying attention to the hard drive, but I believe that the hard drive should start spinning.

I thought so too, just wanted to make sure. I'm wondering if maybe you could answer another question or else I may make another thread on it. Should the laptop still be able to power up without a CPU installed? I mean just power up, not boot up. Because I already replaced this motherboard with the power board and everything and it won't power up. The HD won't spin or anything. So I'm wondering if it's the HD or the CPU.

Well, there's a 750 in there and a quick Google search turned up several results that said it was 750MHz. So, I think it is!

That's most likely caused by not having a CPU.

If you have a CPU installed and your hard drive is not working/not installed, the Dell splash screen will show (with an error message following it).

According to the service tag that you gave me, this is what you have.

But the part number that you supplied is not the above part.

Part Description PIII 750MHz

Part Number PMM75002101AA

I'm confused as to what you acutally have or should have.

Well my dumb forgot to pass the stick of ram on over to the new motherboard, so now the HD spins, but the laptop still shuts off after 3 seconds.   So I have one more question. Will a bad stick of memory cause this? I remember having an issue with my old pc's memory, but I don't remember if it powered down.
