How do I reinstall my IR port?
How do I reinstall my IR port?
I have a Latitude D400, and have been having trouble connecting to anything via IR.
The Windows troubleshooter advice said go to Device Manager and deleted the IR thing, then when you restart it will detect the new hardware and install it.
But Windows has not detected the hardware.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

Infrared support is disabled by default on computers because most customers do not need it. Before you attempt to enable infrared support, complete the operating system setup on your computer.
To configure and enable the infrared port:
Click the Start button, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
If you previously attempted to configure the infrared port, remove all device listings that refer to Infrared or Virtual Devices in the following categories:
• Infrared devices
• Network adapters
• Ports (COM & LPT)
Click the entry you want to remove and then click Remove.
NOTE: If you have not attempted to configure the infrared port, the infrared and virtual entries are not listed in the Device Manager. If you do not need to remove a device, restart the computer and go to step 6.
If you remove a device, when prompted, ensure that Yes, I want to restart my computer now is selected, and then click Finish.
The computer restarts automatically.
When you see the Dell logo, press to enter the system setup program.
Press ALT P to highlight the System Devices menu item.
highlight Infrared Port and then change the setting to Auto.
NOTE: If you want to assign specific I/O or IRQ addresses to the infrared port, ensure that you do not create resource conflicts in the system setup.
Press to save the changes.
After the computer restarts, the operating system detects the infrared hardware.
If prompted, restart your computer.
After the computer restarts, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Infrared icon.
Click the Options tab.
Ensure that the following options are checked:
• Enable infrared communication.
• Search for and provide status for devices within range.
• Install software for Plug and Play devices within range.
Note the port assignments below the Enable infrared communication. checkbox. You may need these port assignments for infrared communication when you set up your infrared device. The ports are usually assigned to COM4 and LPT3.
Click Apply.
After your computer searches for infrared devices within range, click Status in the Infrared Monitor window to see if any devices have been found.
Click OK.
After the infrared device is found, install the drivers for the device(s). See the documentation that came with the device(s) for instructions on installing the drivers.
