How to boot from CD/DVD drive? F2 BIOS is set; F12 does not show the option.

How to boot from CD/DVD drive?  I have F2'ed to change the BIOS boot order where cd/dvd drive is the before the hard-drive. and shift+1 to enable the cd/dvd drive.  Press F12 while the machine Inspiron 17R N7110 is starting, it does not show the CD/DVD drive as option.

Hi jack1320,

Please share the operating system installed. You may try following the below mentioned steps and check if it makes any difference:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F2' key to enter the 'BIOS'.
  • Navigate to the Boot tab. Press Enter on 'Add Boot Option'.

  • You should now get the below mentioned screen.

  • Type 'DVD ROM' for 'Boot Option Name' and then tap the 'Tab' key only once.

  • Ensure that the option similar to the image below (having 'CD' or 'CD ROM' at the end) is selected and press the 'Tab' key again (only once).

  • Tap the space bar only once when the cursor is under 'File Name' as seen in the image below and press 'Tab' key again.

  • Now the 'Yes' button will get highlighted as seen in the image below, press the 'Enter' key.

  • The DVD ROM option will show up as listed under the UEFI Boot as show in the image below.

  • If the process is successful, you should now be able to access the DVD ROM in F12 menu.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks Sahars for your reply. After pressed F2 at startup and navigate to the Boot tab, I did not see the 'Add boot option'.  Under the Boot Priority Order, I have already moved the CD/DVD/CD-RW drive as the 1st order.  And press shift+1 to enable that option. And F12 did not show the cd/dvd boot option (As i have already mentioned in the original post).

The operating system is window 7 / home premium edition.

system model? machine model? Inspiron N7110.

Hi jack1320,

Thank you for sharing the information. Please boot to BIOS and check if the DVD Drive is getting detected there or not. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F2' key to enter the 'BIOS Setup'.
  • Under the 'Main' tab please check if the DVD Drive is listed against 'SATA ODD' or not.

Please reply with the information, will take it further from there.
