Inspiron 1545 Graphics card failure HD 4330

Hi I hope someone can help!

My girlfriend purchased this laptop in New Zealand in October 2009 and in that region it was possible to upgrade the graphics card.

When she came to turn it on today the screen remained black, even though the laptop could be heard booting up in the background.

We managed to get a display using the vga out however it is distorted with blocky blue or yellow lines, and we can only get into windows with safe mode.

From this I assume the graphics card has some serious issues.

What I'm hoping is that it will be possible to replace this part as it was customisable when we bought the laptop.

Is this an option? Can I buy a spares/repairs inspiron 1545 and swap out the gpu?

Thanks for any help,

Tom

$329.95 right here,  http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=6183  .

It is NOT a graphic card,it's a chip attached to the motherboard.

Ouch, okay thats bad news. Would you agree with my diagnosis? Is there any chance it could be a driver/corrupted files issue? Bearing in mind the screen is black unless I plug an external monitor in and even then it seems messed up.

If the video is corrupt on an external monitor then yes,you do need to replace the motherboard (with the ATI graphic chip,NOT the Intel board).

You might be able to find a replacement motherboard with the ATI chip on ebay, which might be $90-$125.00 cheaper?I would get that from the link i posted above if you are planning on keeping the system? You could go a cheaper route if you want to lose the ATI graphic chip,  http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=5891  .With the Intel version it's $199.95.But you lose dedicated graphics?

Your welcome that is what this forum is for.If she is running photoshop CS3,she WILL need the dedicated graphics, the Intel board will NOT be enough for that program. So the cheaper board that i posted will not work, you will need the other more expensive board.I'm not sure where you would find the board being in the UK,not sure if they deliver over seas?

She mainly needs it for photoshop CS3, I dont think this is graphics intensive so integrated gma 4500 may be OK. We live in the UK where the ATI 4330 board was never for sale so sourcing this part is a bit more complicated. Does the GMA 4500 board fit in the 4330 version ok? all the outputs the same etc?

Also thankyou so much for your help so far, it is much appreciated.

I have found one place on ebay that will post to the UK but to be honest the cost is halfway towards buying a new i3 laptop and this may be a better option. Thanks again,
