Trying to connect to any LCD projector

I have a new Latitude E5500 and cannot connect to any LCD projector.  When I toggle Fn F8, it either comes up saying "presentation mode is disabled", or it goes to a blank desktop with just my screen saver, but it still does not project.  I have tried this with many projectors and have also had associates hook their laptops into the same projector, and it works fine.  But not mine.  There must be something in the settings, and I'm desparate.

I have the exact same problem; Fn F8..... "presentation mode is disabled" message on my Precision M4400, trying to connect to a Pany plasma thru the displayport with a displayport --> HDMI adapter. Nothing settable in the Bios. Anyone know what is actually disabled?

OK, I figured it out on my end. I was running off of battery. Later in the day I plugged in the notebook... and no issues at all.

the cable between the laptop and the monitor/TV is probably not plugged in (completely)

push the plugs in as far as they go
