Upgrading graphics in the dell latitude c640
hey,
as most of us know, the best graphics card that can be put into a dell latitude c640 is the ATI Mobility radeon 7500. this is mainly due to the wierd shape of the card. and the fact that it is shaped differently than the cards from later models. (thus a better card will not fit).
however, if you can't upgrade graphics, or don't wanna spend an arm and a leg for a new card. you you can always do the next best thing.
upgrading the memory in your lapop will provide extra memory for the graphics card. because when you play a game that requires more graphics memory than what you have, the graphics card looks to your system's main memory for storage.
now, if you don't have enough memory to accomidate graphics and normal computer functions (like windows stuff, apps running,and additional game-related stuff besides graphics) your computer will put graphics data on the hard drive for temporary storage.
now in the latitude c640, the hard drive is only 5400 rpm, and is slower if your hard drive is loaded up with files and is badly fragmented.
the best way to improve graphics performance without upgrading the graphics card, would be to upgrade the memory. even if you have 512 mb, upgrading to a gig or even 768 megs will show dramatic improvement in graphics. I myself upgraded my c640 to 768 megs and now I can play gta san andreas in lowest settings with no lag!!!!
depending on the ram configuration in your laptop. it should cost ya as much as 80 bucks to upgrade to a gig. the c640 maxes out at a gig, so don't think about upgrading more. just buy 2 sticks of 512 mb ddr pc 2100. that should do the trick. you can get memory from just about anywhere, i got my memory for 40 bucks a stick (45 with shipping). just look around.
the only other thing you can upgrade to improve graphics is the processor, this will not improve graphics as much as ram will and will cost ya about 100-200 bucks. trust me, it is not worth the price.
