PudgyOne has a great post regarding Webcam issues.

I also want to point out a basic webcam troubleshooter.

The webcam is designed to use the native Microsoft drivers in Windows 7. So if you have installed Windows 7, I would suggest checking device manager and see if the webcam is mentioned there. I don't suggest installing any driver as it could corrupt Windows and keep the webcam from being detected.
Please let me know what you find out.
