Latitude 7490 Overheating

We have 7490's and about a third of them run at 100% for NO REASON.

 

I LITERALLY JUST UNBOXED 5 OF THEM AND 2 OUT OF 5 ARE BLOWING AT 100% FAN POWER.

 

The other 3 are silent. This is straight out of the box behavior, with stock power adapters. 

 

 

Disabling Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS fixes this temporarily. I rolled them up to 1.3.3 (latest bios) and saw no change. The laptops are actually hot. Like this is clearly a thermo problem if 3 of them are fine out of the box.

I installed 1.7.2 yesterday. I undocked from a dual-monitor D3000 today, and my laptop display is blank. Power cycling the laptop is the only fix for this, at this point.

The laptop also made the same high-revving fan noise under essentially no CPU load again this morning. It was on a flat, wooden surface. 1.7.2 doesn't seem to have had any effect on these issues.

Our firm has been a Dell Premier client for 10 years.  We solely purchase Dell Optiplex and Latitude for our staff.  After completing a refresh project of 45 x Latitude 7490s, we are experiencing a 20% or higher rate of various issues.  The original bios that came installed was 1.5.1 and the .CAB drivers which are downloadable from Dell.com are injected through Dell IA.  Pro Support immediately tells us to upgrade to 1.6 and get all newer drivers from their site. (Why .CAB files aren't already the most up-to-date is another question for another day)  After upgrading all machines to 1.6 BIOS and upgrading all drivers for both the 7490 and TB16 docking station, we still are experiencing issues that keep our small IT department busy at all hours.  The Latitude 7490 is the first machine that makes me reconsider Dell as a long-term provider.  I have a great relationship with sales rep, Pro Support, and Image Assist support reps.  The 7490 matched with TB16 docking station has been the worst hardware purchase our firm has ever seen.  Please fix this Dell or allow us to downgrade to the 7480/7470 which have already proven to be reliable from the factory.  I'll deploy this newest BIOS but I have little faith it will resolve the overheating, BSOD, USB sluggishness, docking station display blackouts, and other issues.

you were right dear @raf2222 , Dell sent me a technician to replace the motherboard and the heat sink ( which is very costly to them) and the technician has damaged the mesh that is in the bottom cover of the laptop !! and the problem was not resolved !! then I reported that to Dell so they decided to replace the heat sink again !! and also they decided to replace the bottom cover along with the mesh since they are considered as one piece, and the technician had to remove the labels (Windows sticker & DELL service tag sticker) on the bottom cover and stick it on the new one which has corrupted the labels :"( , it looks really bad to me, it kills the joy of owning a new laptop. I told Dell that I'm buying only Dell latitude laptops and optiplex desktops since 10 years at work, and I have never seen this issue with any model, starting with latitude D620, until latitude 7480, but this latitude 7490 is nothing like the older models. after a long conversation with DELL support, and after they have asked me to install a software to monitor the temperature (which was reaching maximum to 86~97 Celsius sometimes, and minimum 68~76) they have involved what they call ( product specialists ), they replied to me that the laptop is behaving normally as designed !! they are ignoring that I'm buying their products since 10 years and I know them better than their employees because I'm discovering the issues and reporting to them and suffering to resolve all the issues in IT. How come you replaced the motherboard once and the heat sink twice and then you tell me it is working as designed and nothing wrong !! is 97 Celsius fine under normal usage? why did you replace them and corrupted my new laptop !! I even captured a video of the fan noise and sent it to them to hear the fan noise. I can't trust DELL anymore and this makes me consider changing to another brand, even if DELL has released a new BIOS update that will resolve the issue still I can't trust them because now after going through this I doubt that they will be transparent. they might release a new BIOS that will reduce the processor performance to reduce the heat which will reduce the fan noise, which means the laptop performance will reduce, I purchased this laptop for its high performance and specifications. Dear DELL, it is much better to be transparent about your problems than hiding i. I guess all of us here in this thread are IT experts and are buying dell latitude since years and years and we can tell the difference. I find it offensive to us when you simply say "it is working as designed". it is bad to your reputation. When we encounter with an issue with one of your product, we in IT, we troubleshoot it ourselves based on our experience, we try a lot of things before communicating with you, and then we give you a summarized explained report of the issue and the steps we tried, we are not like a normal home end user, it is consuming a lot of time and effort, what about our wasted time in resolving your issues and giving you a helpful feedback ? is this how you pay us back? be transparent, don't be like apple when they have released an iOS update that will silently slowdown and freeze their old iPhones to force their customers to buy new iPhones and they were forced to admit it and apologize when it went public. I know I have written so much, maybe because I'm frustrated about the time and effort that I spend in resolving an issue and eventually the response is "there is no issue".

I have the exactly the same problem, if the processor power management is allowed 100% it runs continuously at 4GHz with maximum fan even when idle. Reducing the power management to 99% clamps the processor at 2GHz and prevents any boost.

Any solution from Dell?

Hello guys, I'm experiencing same issue here in Italy Few days ago a new update was released by DELL, installed on 2 workstation and after 2 days temperature is good ( between 40 to 60 C ) Try to install;Intel-Dynamic-Platform-and-Thermal-Framework_D4G6R_WIN_8.3.10207.5567_A09 This driver was update on Jan 19 by DELL. I also disable an option from the Bios but right now I haven't here one of this pc so I can't tell you the right one

This solve the issue, the combination of driver plus disabling turbo boost from BIOS solve the problem. I have temperature between 60 to 90 C on 10/15 workstations. I applied the driver and disable turbo boost and the temperature is now between 45 to 60 that it's really accettable

same issue here with the 7490.

 

Windows 10 

CPU intel i7

cpu used by 10-20% and noisy fan

 

bios is the latest. Any solution for this?

 

Is this a Windows 10 related issue? Since we have this on a lot of 7490

The problem has nothing to do with windows 10 but is related to the bad cooling system of this laptop.


There is no way to solve the problem (as it is caused by the hardware design).


You can however lower the fan noise by limiting the performance of the CPU (less noise, less heat, less performance).


I can say that I am really not happy with this laptop... But dell does not care as the laptop has already been paid.


Edit: I am using ThrottleStop software in order to address the fan noise issue, with the following modifications:
- disable SpeedStep (keep SpeedShift with a value of 128)
- lower the Turbo Ratio Limits in "FIVR" tab from 42 to 21 (yes, half of the maximum CPU frequency)
- lower the TDP in "TPL" tab : 22 needs to be lowered to 15, and 44 needs to be lowered to 25.

That way, I have no noise from the laptop, but that kills the performance.

hey i did the following and now my laptop isnt noisy anymore:

 

To disable compression Run as Administrator the program "WINDOWS POWERSHELL" and run the command "Disable-MMAgent -mc " . Then EXIT and REBOOT.

Disable bios c-staes

 

---

 

Disable Intel step

 

 

for now the TB16 is more noisy than the 7490 (10 days running with 10hours usage a day)

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same kind of issue as lots of 7490 owners.

Here's my ThrottleStop parameters that give me an acceptable workaround (good balance between performance and temp/noise level) :

- On the main panel, Speed Shift - EPP checked with the value set to 128.

- On the FIVR panel, set turbo ratio limit to 31 for each active cores (max boost frequency limited to 3,1 GHz).

 

With that configuration, my cpu temp is most of the time around 50°C (cpu load under 40%). On heavy load, 100% cpu load during a period of thime,  it runs nearly 90°C and the fan is a bit loudy.

But my work rarely put my laptop on 100% cpu load on a long period so, when the load stops, the cpu temp quickly goes down to 50°C and the fan stops running fast...

Maybe an under voltage configuration could help on the load part, but I'm not relly concerned so...

UPDATE : I played a little bit with under voltage on both CPU Core and CPU Cache (in FIVR panel) and set it to -50.8 mV and now I only reach 80°C in long running full charge treatment...
