Maximum supported hdd size for e6520

Question

I've just upgraded my hdd to 1TB, but only 200GB is recognized. Did I waste money or is there a work around for this?

I re-examined the old hdd this morning seeing that it is a 180GB SSD. Then it hit me that the issue wasn't that the laptop could not recognize a 1TB hdd, it was a matter of partition size and location. When I cloned the old drive to the new, I didn't take into account the nearly 800GB of unallocated space behind the volume 3 partition.

The easy fix was to download a freeware utility to merge the unallocated space with the "C" partition. Problem solved.

That's why I'm confused. Of course, dell support only looks for an OS up to XP for this system. Could there be a bios or firmware limitation?

Thank you for your reply @U2CAMEB4ME. I had looked at disk manager, and it helped me realize the actual issue, but could not solve it for me. The disk had this partition structure:

System Reserved Partition | C Partition | * Partition | Unallocated Partition

Since the unallocated partition was at the end of the line, and not before any of the others, I could not merge it. At least, that's my understanding.

@Earth Suit  If you had actually wrote that you cloned your existing HDD to the SSD, then we could have told you what happened.   .
