Burning the DVD restore ISO image to disc

Question

Hello. My Dell Linux laptop is being delivered today (yay). The first thing I want to do is burn the DVD restore ISO image to a blank DVD disc. How do I do this? Thanks

I'll give you a hint: Once you hunt down the .iso for your restore disc, right-click on it.  You should see an option that says 'Write to Disc.'  It's that easy... no kidding!

It *should* be that easy, but when I try it it won't work. I tried the right click option and just get the message "There was an error writing to the disk: The files selected did not fit on the DVD".

I tried with Brasero; same result.

I tried with k3b, and at first things looked better; it said it was burning the iso image, and ran through a preformatting stage. Then it popped up a message "Erasing failed" and ejected the disk.

I'm just trying to burn this to an ordinary DVD+RW. Has anyone got this to work?

You will need a Dual Layer DVD disc. The capacity of a ordinary DVD is 4.7GB. The ISO on my desktop is 4.9. Too big to fit on a ordinary DVD disc. The Dual Layer disc can hold 8.5GB.

You can buy a 3-pack for about $10.

On my factory installed Ubuntu Dell, it was right on the desktop (I think - if I remember right. I've changed things quite a bit in the 10 days I've had this ; - )

One thing you can try is to open a terminal and run the command

sudo updatedb

This will update the 'locate' database. When that process finishes, run

sudo locate *.iso

This will show you where all the files that end in 'iso' are located on your computer.

Hey,

Sorry for the incredible necropost here...

But I bought one of these laptops directly from Dell back in 2008... that shipped with Ubuntu 8.04 and the LinDVD / Fluendo codecs pre-loaded.

12 years later... I've recently refurbished it and I'm hoping to (at some point) do a talk on the history of Linux on the desktop... it'd be lovely to load on the original factory OS (complete with how it was configured and the additional software).

Unfortunately after (what seems like years of) chatting with Canonical and Dell... it turns out the restore images were never centrally hosted anywhere for download (at least not versions including the machine-specific configs or software).

So basically these ISO images only exist for people who actually ran the image creator tool... which was a shortcut on the desktop when they bought it.

I was wondering (to anyone reading this) if anyone had kept that 4.9GB-ish ISO after all this time? Or possibly a burnt dual-layer DVD with it written on to?
