Dell xps 13 9370 Webcam support
I got my dell xps yesterday. It is the developers edition that come with ubuntu 16.04 preinstalled.
I notice that cheese does not come installed, so I installed but no webcam is detected. I can see it if I do an lsusb, so I know is activated.
I was wondering, does this laptop supports the webcam or not?
Edit: Good news, a dell engineer came and replace the monitor, that has the webcam integrated and presto, it is working now.
Update: Most of the problems with the webcam is not hardware based. Looks like many of the laptops come with a firmware that the latest Linux kernel do not support at the moment. To solve the issue, Dell is replacing the whole monitor with a downgrade firmware of the webcam. If a less drastic solution is reported, I will update the post with it.
Update2: Looks like there is a software solution now.

Let's cross our fingers they come out with something. But in the meantime, Dell should not be advertising the XPS 13 9370 with Ubuntu pre-installed and a not working webcam. Or are they shipping it with the 1.00 firmware after having identified this problem?

They are definitely still shipping systems with nonfunctioning webcams. I just received a third system (the first had the webcam issue, the next had a nonfunctional backlight). The most recent system I received does not have a working webcam and additionally it has a keyboard that loses keystrokes.
If you want a working webcam now it seems you must ask for the screen to be replaced rather than the entire system because they will just send you one that doesn't work.

I just met with a technician today, got the screen replaced and now I have a working webcam. The output of "dmesg | grep uvcvideo" is below. I don't know that all of it is good but the webcam does work (I tried Cheese and Skype).

I have the same problem with the webcam but the technician from Dell does not want to replace the monitor for me. Any updates on this?

2. the webcam doesn't work under Ubuntu 18.04.
I received this laptop 2 weeks ago. I'd rather wait for a software/firmware fix than have the screen replaced.

It would be good if the Linux Dell department could tell all technical support centers in the world about this issue and to ask them not to waste the time of their costumers with useless and clueless things. The technical support here in Spain has asked me now to look at
http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/
after suggesting three or four other useless things.

@Community,
I can confirm that Dell engineering has found the root cause of the issue and is planning to release a solution within the next 2 weeks. Engineering didn't confirm for me in what form the fix will be but the term 'OS patch' was used.
I'll get more detail and post back as soon as I can.

Definitely worth sharing, there haven't been any solutions proposed here except that in some cases/countries Dell has changed the laptop screen and put a new one with a webcam with the downgraded firmware.

If you share the files and the command, I will update the original post with the solution.

Hello,
After discussing with Dell's french customer support, I was able to downgrade the camera's firmware and have a working camera.
At first they sent me an .iso file I was never able to boot from but we reverse engineered the content of it to come down to 2 files and 1 command that did the trick.
I haven't followed the whole thread. Has a similar solution already come up or is it something that's worth sharing?

Hi
So here is the archive with the tool to flash and the firmware file :
< link removed by moderator >
Untar the archive and then go inside the folder, and you should be able to execute: sudo ./rts_uvc -v 0x0bda -p 0x58f4 --download 170606_6BF129N2_58F4_v7605.rfw
It should say a huge "PASS", then I rebooted (not sure it was mandatory but did it anyway) and now I have a working camera
Please update if it helps someone else

You have to cd to the right directory first:
For the record: it works flawlessly for me: I did not even have to reboot!
Where does this firmware come from?
Oh I see... That's much smarter than changing a screen! :-)ThursdayNext

sudo: ./rts_uvc: command not found
What am I doing wrong?

I can confirm that this works, and did not require a reboot.
Can Dell please formalize this solution (i.e. provide the fix as a download from their servers)?
