Install Dell printer V105 on Ubuntu 8.04

Hello there,

I am trying to install a printer DELL V105 on an Ubuntu 8.04 amd64 laptop.

The laptop recognizes the printer on the USB port but does not find the proper driver. It uses a generic driver instead that does not work!

When checking DELL's web site one can see that the only driver that are available are for Windows machines!

Would anybody know what is the way to install this printer under Ubuntu?

Any repository to be suggested?

Thanks in advance, Bagvian

The following website has a list of Dell printers that are known to work with Linux.

Unfortunately your printer is not listed at all. You are probably out of luck. I recently purchased a Dell V305w to go along with the purchase of a Dell XPS M1530 laptop preloaded with Ubuntu 8.04. I was not able to get the V305w to work and had to return it. I replaced it with an HP Deskjet F4280 All-in-One that worked just fine after downloading the latest HP drivers. Dell will probably have linux drivers for their printers sometime in the future. At least I would think that they would considering that they are selling desktops and laptops preloaded with Ubuntu.

Currently, in my opinion, Hewlett-Packard has the best linux support for their printers. They really make it easy to get an HP printer up and running. Hope this info helps.

I can second that.  An HP printer is the best way to go.  Almost every model that HP has made is supported.  If you have the opportunity to return the Dell printer I would do that.  Also certain Canon and Lexmark printers are well support.  But I would still recommend HP.

Some people consider it a failing of Linux that many printers are not supported.  I have even noticed the Dell moderators here falling into the same bad habit.  But it is up to the printer manufacturers to either make the drivers available or allow 3rd parties the access to their firmware in order to write the drivers.  Same problem with some of the wireless adapters.  This is a Dell issue in this case, not a failing of Ubuntu or Linux.

Dear Mike and Darell,

Many thanks for your answers.

I very much enjoyed with reading your answers though it will not allow me to make my printer work.

If I summarise, the message is:

When you run a Linux system and you need a printer, buy an HP, even (especially), if you computer is a Dell preloaded with Ubuntu.

Should I tag the post as “solved”?

Well, the last things I could get on the subject is that the V105 is very similar to the Lexmark X2650, which appears in the list given at http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Anyone

I will try to see if I can manage...

Cheers, Bagvian

Good luck Bagvian, that can work.  And let us know if it does work.  Your response could help someone else.
