Soundblaster live 5.1 driver for linux

Hi,

I installed Redhat Linux 9 and it is working fine on my DIM 4550 with the exception of the sound card. After searching the web found a driver for the soundcard soundblaster 5.1 live and it is now working as well. The only problem is the driver is a demo version. So I was wondering if anyone knows whether there are any free driver availabe for that card. Also, I'd appreciate any help with how to burn cds and watch dvds in the linux. Thanks.

Hi AD, you might want to check out these sites:
opensource.creative
opensound.com

The latter should be able to provide you with a oss driver I think.

Sorry but I can offer no help for the CD or DVD questions. :-)

HTH a little.
Best regards to you.

Well, on that point DELL just s***s, they modified the Sound Blaster 5.1 it's not the same specifications anymore. It is a modified version with an Emu10k1X and not the standard Emu10K1, and the only driver available is commercial... In the name of the linux community, thank you Dell.

I have been fighting for almost a year with the support service who just asked me to look further and further to try to find a solution (without giving me any because my computer was sold with WinXP that i didn't want...)

Anyway, like me you bought a nice sound card that you can't use, if you are not happy i advise you to tell them, the more we are the best it is

I have installed Mandrake 9.1 and have the same problem. Why would Dell modify the sound card and not give the ALSA project the specs to implement the driver?

I would say, if Dell does not want to provide the lixnu driver, it would be a good idea to donate one of those cards to the Sound Blaster Live! maintainer. Please let me know if Dell wants to do so. If Dell won't do this, I will. So just let me know. It would be cheaper and more compatible with most of the Linux applications (including the MDK Control Center and whatever is similar to it on Redhat) than the OSS commerical drivers.

I just tried the opensound.com commercial driver and it seems to work. However, they indicate that the front and rear channels are currently identical and the licensing terms seem quite restrictive (only with current version of OS etc). Since I have had to compile the kernel to get my NVIDIA driver to work, I am leery of adding an additional uncontrolled dependency. Anyone have long term experience with 4front.com ?

Anyone know if the true opensource community is working on a solution to this (i.e., developing a sound card driver for the Dell version of the Creative Soundblaster live 5.1 sound card ( Dell CT 0200) ?). I'd prefer to wait if that is the case.

-Gary

P.S. On a related note - do folks know if the ALSA capabilities will replace these drivers or require them to be upgraded ?

ALSA supported card matrix: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/

This card is not even on the list!

As for myself, I didn't have to recompile the kernel to get the NVidia drivers to work. I only downloaded the NVidia drivers and they just worked. This is for MDK 91. You also get the drivers to work out of the box for most distributions. Which dist are you running?

Re burning CD-s: You need to install xcdroast (and the whole cdrecord suite that goes with it).
You can find them either in the RedHat 9 distributions, or better at
http://xcdroast.sourceforge.net/RPMS/a13/

For watching DVD: You need to get VideoLan Client (vlc) from videolan.org.
Installation is a bit complicated since the rpm-s have many dependencies (a52, libdvd, etc),
which can all be downloaded from videolan.org.

Vlc can also be used for listening to streaming mp3 broadcasts on the internet.
Finally, if you don get any sound out of your CD and/or DVD player, connect the analog
outputs of your CD-ROM and DVD+RW drives to the analog inputs of the soundcard (or on-board sound-chip),
and your will get the sound out.

Hope that helps not only people with 5.1 problems!

How is your reply related to the question here? I don't see any relation!

We're talking about drivers that are not avialable and you're listing software applications!!

You're right, sorry about that. I just think that the main problem here is that this sound card. Software apps are all over the place in Linux.

With still no reply from Dell. We need at least the specifications for the card!

Sorry to hear that. I have no problems with the on-board (SoundMax)
sound on the 8250, since I connected the
CD/DVD drives to the analog input with that ¨Y¨ cable.
Has anyone tried that with the Soundblaster card?
It might just happen to work.

Check this out: This is a funny one: http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/uk/enu/gen/local/corporate/press/pressoffice_2000-06-21-brk-000_2003.htm

I'm wondering if Dell does really offer support for their hardware. Or, is it their hardware on Windows? Just a thought!

I, like most of you guys, tried buying Dell with no OS.. didn't work! Not offered. I didn't want to pay for Windows, but I had to. And now, my main OS won't produce sound. If I knew that, I wouldn't have baught the sound card from Dell and would have gone across the street to BestBuy and baught a nice card. Now, what shall I do? I guess Dll should support my system. I do want my SB Live! to work. I ordered an SB Live! as sold by creative. The one in my machine is not the same as the one that creative sells. I need at least the specification to it. Will someone from Dell answer please?

There is nothing we can do except express our anger.

I contacted DELL, and as they shipped us a computer running Windows, they don't care if it doesn't work under Linux. After i asked if it's legal to sell us a Sound Blaster 5.1 (compatible with Linux) modified without our consentment, they asked me to contact another service, i got tired that story is almost one year old for me now.

I would just no recommend DELL for someone who plan to install Linux, spread the word...

I have a nice unsed circuit board on my desk that was suppose to make nice sound, anyone want it ?

Well someone from Dell should at least admit that they should have informed us of the modification of the creative soundcard before selling the system. There wasn't any explicit warning on the system configuration page, neither did the sales rep mentioned this matter. Did anyone have any idea of this predicament when he/she configured the DIM4550 system? I did not and I think I'm not alone. Dell's silence on this matter is only making the matter worse. Just out of curosity, don't they have any legal obligation to let us know that it isn't the exact same card as the creative's?

This is how it shows in the order:

Sound Card : SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Digital Sound Card

No hints of any modifications to the system. What I see here is the SoundBlaster Live! 5.1. No  mention of any modifications.
