i8500 & SuSe 8.1 Network Issue, ifup: Could not get a valid interface name: -> skipped

hi mates,

i received my i8500 last week and as it gets out of the box i tried to install suse linux 8.1 pro. everything works fine besides network configuration.

Every time i load  linux i get the message

ifup: Could not get a valid interface name: -> skipped         failed

Yast identified the Network adapter as Dell Ethernet Controller and everythings seems right.

here is what hwinfo says:

01: None 00.0: 10700 Loopback

[Created at net.66]

Unique ID: n6T_.GQNx7L4uPNA

Hardware Class: network interface

Model: "Loopback network interface"

Device File: lo

Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no

02: None 00.0: 10781 Network Interface

[Created at net.66]

Unique ID: RaT_.nfEXJulusj6

Hardware Class: network interface

Model: "Network Interface"

Device File: sit0

Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no

And my ifupcfg-eth0:

BOOTPROTO='dhcp'

REMOTE_IPADDR=''

STARTMODE='onboot'

UNIQUE='B35A.iShmefsNM+5'

WIRELESS='no'

BROADCAST='192.168.0.255'

IPADDR='192.168.0.13'

NETMASK='255.255.255.0'

NETWORK='192.168.0.0'

I already tried some hints i found in other forums like updating the kernel et cetera but nothing worked. If anyone has an solution or workaround ols help :)

I wouldn't be sure, that SuSE 8.1 supports the card outofthebox...

even in the *brandnew* rh9 I had to fetch the source, compile it, and install ...

The output, you posted doesn't include any info 'bout the broadcom card, does it?

Look on this site (yes, it's redhat, but I found the link there)
http://www.garshol.priv.no/download/i8500/
and download the mentioned driver.

Be sure, to have the kernel-development-packages installed, so you can compile this module ...

(untar/make/make install)

after the make (before install) you can check, if it works, by
insmod bcm4400.o
ifconfig eth0

afterwards you should be able to configure this interface...

The best thing I can suggest is to go into YAST and try to reconfigure the network interface. In versions before 8, it seems that ifconfig was the way to do this but not since 8.0. I believe that everything is in /etc/sysconfig now.

yasokuhl,

i was getting exactly the same problem with SuSE 8.1.  now i'm getting a problem where every time even if i get eth0 up okay (with static IP or DHCP) the whole box hangs as soon as it's plugged into a network switch and eth0 is brought up..  it doesn't matter if i plug in the ethernet cable prior to powering the system on or when the machine is already up.  i know the switch is okay as is the cable because i've used them from windows.

another example...i did an ifdown eth0 to bring it down...plugged in the cable...did some other stuff for like 20 minutes (to be sure there wasn't any weirdities with hardware)...everything was fine...at that point (with the cable plugged in), i did an ifup eth0...and BOOM...the whole machine hangs.

did you ever figure out the solution to your problem?  any suggestions for me would be appreciated!

I updated the e1000 driver from the Intel site.  That did the trick.
