The best thing I can suggest is to go into YAST and try to reconfigure the network interface. In versions before 8, it seems that ifconfig was the way to do this but not since 8.0. I believe that everything is in /etc/sysconfig now.
i was getting exactly the same problem with SuSE 8.1. now i'm getting a problem where every time even if i get eth0 up okay (with static IP or DHCP) the whole box hangs as soon as it's plugged into a network switch and eth0 is brought up.. it doesn't matter if i plug in the ethernet cable prior to powering the system on or when the machine is already up. i know the switch is okay as is the cable because i've used them from windows.
another example...i did an ifdown eth0 to bring it down...plugged in the cable...did some other stuff for like 20 minutes (to be sure there wasn't any weirdities with hardware)...everything was fine...at that point (with the cable plugged in), i did an ifup eth0...and BOOM...the whole machine hangs.
did you ever figure out the solution to your problem? any suggestions for me would be appreciated!

even in the *brandnew* rh9 I had to fetch the source, compile it, and install ...
The output, you posted doesn't include any info 'bout the broadcom card, does it?
Look on this site (yes, it's redhat, but I found the link there)
http://www.garshol.priv.no/download/i8500/
and download the mentioned driver.
Be sure, to have the kernel-development-packages installed, so you can compile this module ...
(untar/make/make install)
after the make (before install) you can check, if it works, by
insmod bcm4400.o
ifconfig eth0
afterwards you should be able to configure this interface...
