2005FPW resolution nightmare

OK, I just bought this beautiful 2005fpw, looks like a great monitor and I can't use it at all. My notebook has a Radeon 9200, which only supports 16/9 screens at 1920 x 1080, and the Dell complains that it doesn't support that resolution and does nothing. Even my desktop has a Radeon 7000 in it that doesn't support any high resolutions applicable to this monitor. I downloaded Powerstrip, and tried settinng up a custom resolution, but that doesn't work: I end up with an incorrect aspect ratio (my notebook only has a composite and s-video out, the latter I haven't tried). Otherwise, on the monitor I can change the image settings/scaling to 1:1 and get a little tiny picture in the screen, to aspect to get the right aspect ratio (sometimes) but typically leaving big black strips on either side, or to Fill which stretches the aspect ratio out of proportion.

I do drafting, so the aspect ratio has to be right. I guess I was an idiot leaving this question unasked until I opened the box, but I can't believe more people aren't running into it. Am I missing something? Is there no way to get this working (on my notebook, preferably, which means no new video board). I have downloaded the latest drivers I can find for the 9200 (have to use Compaq drivers, ATI doesn't support imbedded video cards or something).

Compaq x1000 notebook with Radeon 9200 card on motherboard. Huge thanks to anyone that can give me a hand with this!

ciao, keith

you knew ahead of time the max resolution, why didnt you check to make sure your laptop supported it?

i think there is a setting that allows you to display unsupported resolutions somewhere in windows, but this is YMMV

Well, actually my machine does support greater than the maximum resolution of this monitor: it just doesn't support the specific resolution. For example, the only 16/9 aspect ratio resolution the Radeon supports is 1920x1080, and the monitor can't do anything at all with that (its max being 1680 x 1024). Meanwhile, if I give it other resolutions that it can't handle, it figures out how to squish them or let them run off the edge or other responses. So the only resolution that should lead to a proper aspect ratio, is locked out.

I'd hoped that the Powerstrip utility would solve the problem, but it seems to only fake a proper resolution, I don't think it's changing what's being sent to the monitor, just what's being reported. Oh well. I would strongly encourage people to be careful buying this monitor, since I also can't get it to work with my desktop Radeon 7000/VE, but at least that one I could upgrade the card. I'm just out of luck with my laptop (which is what I really use). And, since I bought it "used" (new but separated from a system by an individual), I can get no Dell support, unless I buy it at $200/year (not even per incident!). I am dissapointed and much less apt to go Dell again (I've bought a lot of Dell over the years). Oh well.

I've checked using Moninfo, and it does seem that my laptop is putting out 1680x1050. The Dell is clearly showing 1280x1050 or something like that, stretched to fit the wide screen, which is why the aspect ratio is wrong and there is "invisible" screen off to one side, where my mouse can get lost since it's not displayed on either of my monitors. It looks like a problem with the monitor, since the 1:1, fill, and aspect settings make no difference (and I'm sure they should!). I wonder if anyone else has had this problem? Here are the moninfo results:
