2408 hdmi/hdcp?

I am having a problem trying to hook my cable box up to my 2408 dell monitor.  It is saying that it does not support HDCP.  I'm looking at the website write up and it does say it supports HDCP, but it says this next to DVI.  I am using an HDMI cable, does the 2408 not support HDCP for HDMI?

you could try a DVi-to-HDMI cable, if all else fails.

Mike- Thanks for the reply to this post and my other posting.  This question was actually related to my other (about the sound), I actually was trying to use an HDMI because it carries the sound in addition to the picture, the DVI doesn't, which is why I was pretty upset when the message on my screen came up saying that the tv(monitor) doesn't support HDCP.

So I'm trying to get official word about the 2408 model and it's support of HDCP through HDMI.  I don't know too much about this stuff, just getting into it now, but it seems quite odd to me that the monitor would support HDCP through the DVI cable (which is explicitly stated on the write up on Dell's website), but does not support HDCP through an HDMI cable.  I think I may have to end up following the instructions on my other post to run the RCA cables throgh the mini jack on my computer.  Do you think this is the best way?

I just tested my 2408 on HDMI using my ASUS 3870 with the DVI-to-HDMI adapter. note that this card officially supports HDMI, and ATI CCC recognizes an HDMI connection. I tested using PowerDVD playing Blu-Ray, and it works fine for video. this software player strictly requires HDCP, regardless of whether the content requires HDCP, so I am certain HDCP is working correctly here. so I would say this monitor supports HDCP on HDMI.

this is not the first time I have read that a cable box failed due to HDCP.

this link speaks of problem with HDMI audio, but still might be a good idea to try in general, i.e. power off 2408 then on, also try unpluggling the 2408 from the wall, testing with the cable box powered on and off, etc. I would also try variations with factory resets on the 2408. HDCP can be very finicky, especially with cable boxes.

if HDMI fails, I would look at DVi-to-HDMI, and even Component connections, and route the audio direct. I prefer digital where possible, but for this application, analogue should be very good.

-mike5065, thanks for looking into this.  It is good to at least know that someone else is having theh exact same problem.  I posted there too to let him know that I'm having that problem as well.  Thanks for confirming that the 2408 is HDCP compliant through HDMI, as you can see from my response to the post in the link you sent me I was unhappily lied to by Dell.

On another note, I'm not familiar with which settings to allow to go to my monitor from the cable box (1080i, 720p, 480 etc).  I know that everything is at its best when the signal is at the monitors native resolution, but since this monitors native resolution is so high, would it matter what signals I allowed in from the cable box?  Wouldn't it be ok just to allow everything?  Thanks so much for your help!

-mike5065, also I tried the turning on/off the powering of both the monitor and the cable box in different sequences to no avail.  I will reluctantly use component cables for now.  If you can think of anything else please let me know.  Thanks!

yes, it should matter what signals you allow / send from cable  box.

the 2408 specs say:

DVI: 480p/576p/720p/1080p (Supports HDCP)

HDMI: 480i/480p/576i/576p/720p/1080i/1080p

Component: 480i/480p/576i/576p/720p/1080i/1080p

cable companies usually provide 720p and 1080i for highdef channels, and 480 i/p for stddef channels. during cable box setup, I would try allowing everything and see what works consistently, and then turn off (re-setup) the anything but 480p, 720p and 1080i. I would test for the HDCP issues with 480p, 720p and 1080i.

but after testing, in the end I would set the cable box to be capable of 480p, 720p and 1080i, and then use 1080i to better match the 2408's native resolution, or to passthru (i.e. could be 720p or 1080i depending on the channel) to have the 2408 scale any 720p content (the 2408 should scale to native 1080 better than the cable box would).

if you cannot solve the HDCP (also, check for problems with your cable box model) and stuck with component, I would spend a bit on analogue cables since they can degrade the signal if they are poor quality.

I have a future interest in hooking up an HD cable box in the future (Scientific Atlanta 3250 with DVI only), I quickly tested this with the 2408, as:

SA3250 --> single-link DVI-to-HDMI adapter --> HDMI cable (25ft) --> 2408 HDMI.

works well. this box is particular about HDCP, so I'm somewhat relieved. this box is DVI only, so sound will be routed direct (as digital) in the future. if you ever get the full HDMI working, that would be good news.
