2408WFP eyeache and headache

Make sure to test it for the left side brightness/washout issue as well.

 

The left hand side of the 2408WFP is considerably brighter than the rest of the screen when viewing dark colours. It is not backlight bleed and is not visible on pure black.

 

But try any dark background, such a very dark red or grey and you will see that the left side is much brighter than the rest of the screen. Any website that is using a very dark, but not black, background will do for testing.

Move the dark background from the center of the screen to the left side and back. Now watch the brightness change :(

 

Sorry I can't help much about your headache problem, but I have mine 55% brightness and around 70 R,G,B via custom colours.

I presume the problem is because of sharpness problem and the afterglow/rainbow effects over certain type of fonts in certain sceneries. My problem was that it blurred my vision after working for some longer time.

 

I adjusted the sharpness to 31%. To do it u need to download softMCCS and follow the "Unsolved 2408wfp sharpness problem" discussion on this site, where you'll find how to use it to get the sharpness right.

 

Another thing is to set the red and green down (for me i set the values to 90%) and the brightness to about 30%.

 

For me it works perfectly, no blurred vision anymore.

 

The only annoying thing is the afterglow effect. It gets reduced with these settings but it does not go away though.

The problem comes certainly from the sharpness and "halos" around fonts.

I have the same problem but I didn't try softMCSS yet.

 

I think that beside the use of softMCSS, the next step would be to apply the color profile 2408wfp.icm to the whole windows environement.

 

When I use this color profile in Firefox (Firefox 3 RC1, allows you to use an ICM profile), red and geen are not saturated and fonts are much easier to read. And th websites colors are correct !!

 

But so far nobody can help me... (I'm using Vista).

 

I tried with the standard Windows colour management tools (in Control Panel/Display) but it seems to have no effect.

 

Maybe a third-party software will do the trick but I didn't find it yet.

I tried MCW and Quickgamma but they does not seem to load 2408WFP.ICM.

Firefox does it, but not Windows !!

I've tested the tips on the "Unsolved 2408wfp sharpness problem" post. Texts readability has improven very much with a value of 37.

 

Also, I've turned down brightness using the colour sliders on the monitor menu. Now I'm using:

 

 - Brightness 70: At values lower than 67 the monitor flickers. It is not visible to a naked eye, but it's very visible watching the monitor through the display of a digital camera, specially with the lowest values. 

 

- Contrast 50

 

- R: 70

- G: 72

- B: 75

 

It is still very bright, but if I lower the values the whites are more gray than white. 

 

I've noticed that solid colors aren't fully solid. Thy have a little grain or noise.

 

In my computer with Windows XP and a nVidia graphics atapter the MCW software works. I generate a profile using the wizzard, save it and check the "Load at windows startup" control.

 

Respecting colour calibration I'm considering to buy  a hardware color calibrator:

43 or 37 are big improvement for my eyes ! Thanx ;)

 

Maybe you should check that DCC is enabled for your 2408: in the OSD check the Other Settings (if I remember correctly).

 

By the way, does anybody know what is located at 0C ?

also owning a "brand-new" Rev.A00 2408 TFT and also being troubled by the excessive sharpness and its halo effects, I tried ramping down the sharpness setting using this SoftMCCS tool as advised here and in the "Unsolved 2408wfp sharpness problem" post. Unfortunately I wasn't able to change the sharpness value at all. Any changes sent were immediately discarded and when I selected "Show all commands" in SoftMCCS the sharpness setting was greyed out and set to 0. I am using the DVI port, btw. Is there anything I am missing (granted, I didn't read SoftMCCS's manual yet, so it might just be an oversight on my part ;) ). Has anybody else experienced this?

I'm still trying to chase root of the problem why 2408 is displaying perfect fonts in some sceneries and why sometimes they are with rainbow/afterglow effect.

 

Yesterday I have installed Firefox 3 RC1 and on any affected web pages I cannot see any afterglow at all, whereas the IE7 shows it really ugly. I made sure that ClearType is switched off. With ClearType on actually any text is almost unreadable on my unit.

 

Another discovery was that the afterglow and contrast issues depends significantly on the graphics card I used. The result was really surprising, here are the tests configs:

 

1. ASUS card, based on NVidia 7600GS PCI Express versio, 512MB, DVI  - huge afterglow

2. MSI card based on NVidia 7600GS AGP 8x, 512MB, DVI -afterglow very small!! VGA input - almost none! (however the overall sharpness was affected)

 

Both tests above were done using the latest stable Nvidia drivers, i.e. v6.14.11.6921. Note also that the chipset version is the same.

 

3. VGA input from ASUS laptop with Intel embedded graphic chipset - afterglow almost none, however quality not that good.

 

Can I ask you guys to put the type of your graphics gard you use for your 2408 and tell if you see any afterglow/rainbows around texts or not, and how's with sharpness? The best test is just to use IE7 and look for small fonts in bold.

 

Big question for DELL: Could you recommend any graphics card for the 2408 to reduce this problem?

I've a Nvidia Quadro NVS 120M (GeForce Go 7400) in a Latitude D820. Afterglow is visible but small.

Sharpness is Ok with SoftMCCS.

 

Please SoftMCCS users, could you post here the return string you've (in the log window) when your read the value at 0C:

 

In the command-line editor, simply type:

01 0C

 

and copy/paste here the return... I'm just curious about this value...

In French, but look at the graphs. Conclusion: The spyder2Express and other low price tools are not worth the price. You can do better manually or with free software help. The X-Rite Eye-One Display 2 is not bad at 195$ on Amazon.The best is the LaCie, le Blue Eye Pro (about 400$US).

In French but I think you can manage. At the top of the page, you have links for manufacturers (from A to G, H to N) and a link for installation instructions with Windows (you need WinColor, free from Microsoft)  

Note: the profile will improve display if the profile was done with the same panel you have. For instance, the Dell 2407WFP was manufactured with at least 5 different panels. You can try different profiles on your set up.

 

There is a test to check if profiles work on different hardware/OS but it's in French also so I don't give you the URL. The good news is that it works. Not as good as the calibration done on the test computer but the use of a profile done with a different computer used on another computer is still is much better than the factory defaults of the monitor.

It seems that the last 2 bytes of the second line is the value you can set the controller with.

From what I read it's "Request T° (K)".

So it should allow to request a specific "white T°" (instead of being limited to 6500, 5500, 6000).

But I don't think the 2408WFP allows to change it.

I'm just curious if somebody has another value than 00 00 00 00.

I already tried any "OS" way of installing the 2408WFP.ICM (the profile provided by Dell) in Windows (including WinColor, etc). I also tried with third-party apps: Adobe Gamma Loader, Xcalib, MCW, Quickgamma: none seems to apply the .icm to Windows.

 

However it works with Photoshop and Firefox RC1 (where you can manually specify a profile via about:config).

 

I'll try the 2408 profile given by "Focus Numeriques"...

 

Anyway I'm French speaking ;)
