Can't set up 2 monitors/displays with different resolution

I have a Dell XPS desktop computer running XP with one nVidia 8800GT graphics card that has two plugs for digital monitors. Into these two plugs I'm trying to set up my two Dell monitors. One display is a Dell 2408WFP with resolution 1920x1200 and the other is a Dell SP2208WFP, resolution 1680x1050.

I have been going around and around with this for days, trying to get it working so that I have a primary monitor (not a stretched desktop) and a secondary monitor where I can drag docs. So far, I've tried three methods:

- Right clicking on my desktop, opening properties, clicking on Settings and clicking on various options. There are two icons displayed, showing the #1 and #2 monitors. Under the display dropdown menu, my #1 option is "Plug and Play Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT". The #2 dropdown option is "Default Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT." The #1 option is marked as the default and the #2 has the box checked "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.      The main trouble is that my SP2208 monitor just stays in the Powersaving Mode all the time. When I click on the "Identify" button, the primary monitor gets a huge #1, but the other one doesn't do anything.

- The second method I've used is via the NVIDIA Control Panel. Under "Display" I click on "Set up multiple displays." Of the 4 numbers steps, the first dropdown menu gives me two options that are both labeled "GeForce 8800 GT" but the difference between them is "1 of 2" and "2 of 2". The "1 of 2" option gives me four choices on the 2nd step (The choices are to use one monitor, to clone it to the other monitor, and the last two options stretch the desktop between the two monitors. While my second monitor springs to life when I select to stretch between the two monitors, I don't want that), but the "2 of 2" only gives me the "Only use one display" option on the 2nd step. One option says to just use one display -- and it says "ANALOG DISPLAY" in step 3. So that is really wrong considering that it's a digital input on the back of the computer!   The 4th step in the setup that asked me to select the display I want to use as a primary is completely grayed out no matter what combination of options I select in the previous steps.

- The last thing I tried was via the nView Desktop Manager. I had to turn off the "extend my desktop to this monitor" option on the Windows settings panel in order to get the Display properties "Display Wizard" button to show up. When I run the wizard I select "Custom setup" because I want to know exactly what I'm agreeing to when I using the wizard.  There's one thing I can say for this wizard -- at least it recognizes what the heck kind of monitors I've got set up. They are the Dell 2408WFP and the Dell SP2205WFP. (Keep in mind that I have not enabled the nView Desktop Manager yet.)  So in the Display properties wizard I select the 2408WFP monitor as my primary because it's bigger (1920 x 1200). The crazy thing is that when I click on "Identify Displays" it changes the resolution of both monitors (yes, the smaller one fires up and displays its model number, YAY!) but spans the desktop (and this and browser window) between the two monitors. Dumb.  The dumber thing is the next window. It asks me if I want to either span my desktop or clone it. I WANT NEITHER!! But I select "span" because it's closer to what I want, and click "Next". Now, I thought it couldn't get worse, but this next window is asking me for screen resolutions. None of the options are big enough for my primary monitor! The only thing I can think to type is "DUMBEST!"  So I click Finish and now my monitor is set up completely wrong.        So next I decide to enable the nView Desktop Manager. With that done I run through the wizard for that. At least this gives me the option to display on two monitors and to keep the task bar and explorer on my primary monitor. So after completing that, I'm still left with resolutions on both monitors that are completely wrong. So I'm going to move on to try and find something that will change the screen resolutions. Under the "Desktops" tab there is an option box "Enable multiple desktops" that I clicked. Then I clicked the button "Options." The window that comes up is titled "Multiple Desktop Global Options." I clicked on "Allow desktops to use different resolutions." That really didn't do anything for the settings I was looking for.

I headed back to the nVidia Control Panel because I remembered seeing a Custom resolutions menu. After entering various dimentions for each monitor, to my dismay nothing happened. Nothing.

So my question after all this is:

How can I utilize the full resolutions of both of my monitors??

Seems like a pretty simple question. I'd like there to be a simple answer.

Do you need two video cards to do this? If so, then why the heck are there two digital output plugs on my nVidia 8800GT???
