Flat Panel LCD Monitor goes to blank screen immediately

First of all, my computer details:

Dell Dimension 8300
Monitor:  E172FPB 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
Video Card: NVidia Geforce FX 5200

(Obviously, I've had this computer for awhile.)

Up until now, the computer and monitor have been working fine together. Suddenly today the monitor goes to a blank screen after displaying the computer output for about 1 second. If the monitor is powered off and then back on, the screen displays the computer output normally, but then after about a second the screen goes black.  I can cycle the power on and off and the same thing occurs - computer output is displayed normally and then the screen goes black.

I hooked up the monitor to my laptop and the same problem occurs. I can see the laptop output on the monitor and then the monitor goes black.  So I don't believe the problem is with the video card or the computer in general.

I performed the Self-Test Feature Check (STFC) (power off monitor and computer, disconnect the blue cable, power on the monitor) and the self-test image (red, green, blue and white bars) appears but then the monitor screen goes black after about a second.  I have removed power from the monitor and let it sit for several minutes before performing the STFC again, but the same problem occurs.

I have tried to perform a manual factory reset (through the monitor's menu button) but the screen image does not stay on long enough for me to be confident that I have performed it successfully.

Obviously with this problem it is not practical to update any drivers or other software.

So is it time to get a new monitor or is there another way to revive it?
