HDMI OUT to Displayport IN

Computer HDMI out to a monitor DP in can only be achieved by purchasing an active converter. We sell several monitors with HDMI in. The sales site Tech Specs tab shows what ports are on each monitor under connectivity? Below is an example.

multiple HD standards, and Dell cannot support communicating between them even though they sell both. I either: A) live with VGA; B) throw away the new monitor and buy another one; C) pay $70 for an active HDMI --> DP adapter

That was not my intention to belittle you. I was simply stating what the sales page specifications show. For me to assist, what monitor did you purchase? What system model? Did the computer come with an added video card? If yes, what specific video card?

Dell Inspiron 3000 (3847) - right out of the box. 2 video out ports: VGA and HDMI

Dell E2016H - 2 video in ports: VGA and DP

Yes I know that HDMI and DP are not the same. But they are both digital (versus the VGA) - thus dumb me thought that there should be a way to connect the two new Dell components together. Unless you know something that the other 5 live Dell Support people know (plus 3 or so 'chat' sessions) - Dell has produced and sold incompatible products. Again, dumb me for thinking that Dell would have figured out a better solution than a $70 3rd party adapter.

The computers and monitors are not "tied" together as far as video in and out. That would be to complex for our sales site to decipher which is why we list all the specifications out for each item.

Inspiron 3000-3847 video out ports = VGA/HDMI
E2016H video in ports = VGA/DP

Regardless of the video in/out ports used, this entry level monitor maxes to 1600x900 60Hz. Also it does not have audio out. So using VGA instead of DP is not a loss.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to still supply a VGA cable with the monitors? I have purchased 5 computers for my business in the last few months, with monitors suggested by the website during the purchase. Then, when setting them up, I find that I can't connect the monitor to the tower without searching through my old monitors for a VGA cable to connect the 2. Very frustrating. The cables basically cost you nothing, but would at least satisfy the value customers who purchase what they think is a value monitor with a value desktop, only to find them incompatible without an additional cable. over the last 15 years, I have purchased at least 50 computers from Dell, and I am not happy about this change. I just received another one today and now I have to find another cable, or go to the local computer retailer for one. What if I weren't computer savvy? How would I figure this out? Call customer service, waste an hour on the phone, and then be told I still need to spend $23 to purchase something that always came in the box. I would probably pack it up and ship it back. Please take this suggestion seriously. It's bad business to put customers through this. The other option would be to include a DP connection on ALL future desktops.
