Help! How to get 2005FPW to work with GeForce FX5200?

Question

Hi all,
I'm having trouble getting native resolution (1680x1050) on my Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW. I bought a ASUS GeForce FX5200 for this monitor but still have no luck.
Please help! Since Dell markets monitors separately I hope that it does not require a Dell computer as an "accessory".

no way! I have an fx5200 (that came in my dell) and my it put out the 1680x1050 with no problems at all! Make sure you have the latest drivers and everything. It should detect the monitor and set itself automatically. Otherwise try the driver disc that came with the monitor (which I never had to use). good luck

Have any of you had problems with hooking up the DVI to the GeForce FX5200?  Any information will greatly appreciated.

If you buy the GeForce FX5200 video card (and most other cards) separately (not in a Dell PC) then you need to setup a custom resolution, because 1680x1050 is a non standard resolution found only in Dell monitors.

I finally got it to work. After installing the driver for the card, open Windows display properties, click on Settings tab, click Advance, then in the small opened window it has a tab with a "Add" button that allows you to add a custom resolution.
But it took me so long to find out. And the place where I got the answer is from a GeForce user discussion forum, not from Dell.

With all the time spent this monitor is not worth buying.
With this kind of unique resolution, I recommend not buying a Dell LCD
With this kind of customer service, I recommend not buying anything from Dell. You'll be on your own.

Oh yes, "low end" card! So are you suggesting me buying a high end card (around $300, maybe?) just to work with my precious Dell monitor?

the fx5200 is low end, it clan play games but not to good, a fx5600 or 5700 can be held for not to much more than an fx5200

I don't play games. I use MS Word, Excel, web surfing, etc. I just need the monitor to show something on the screen without damaging my eyes.
Besides, even the higher end video cards don't come with 1680x1050.

The point is, a monitor should have a standard resolution so I can use with my existing card. A monitor manufacturer should have a decent customer support so customers can talk to.

Out of the three cards I've used with mine, I've never had a problem. As far as my fx5200, it was a Dell OEM card, but I don't see how that would make a difference in it not being able to detect that display and match the resolution (not saying it can, that just seems wierd). 1680x1050 is a standard resolution, not only used by dell. Some of the Apple monitors use that resolution as well as many notebooks. If you can't get it set using the custom resolutions adjustments as was mentioned before, then those cards HTT mentioned can be had for less then $125. Also, are you using the DVI output on your fx5200, I've been told that that can make a difference in the card being able to detect and display resolutions automatically. good luck

I am posting this as I had similar problems getting my Geforce FX5200 to work with my Viewsonic 22' widescreen monitor.  After several days of googling with no results I finally found a solution.  First, make sure that your drivers for the monitor AND especially the NVIDIA card are updated.  Secondly, make sure that the monitor supports that output.  Click on the below link to the discussion at the Nvidia website.  Follow steps 5 & 6 and that should work.  BE CAREFUL TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS NOT SETTING THE RIGHT TIMINGS MAY DAMAGE YOUR MONITOR!    Now my fonts are clear, crisp and sharp and I'm happy.
