Help please - SP2208WFP New but unusable

Hello everyone,

I'd appreciate any advice before I spend half a day on the phone getting help from Dell Ireland. I'm currently working at night making this difficult. My problem is a SP2208WFP I purchased new in November last and have had in its box until last month due to a major house move over the interim. The monitor came with us in the car so I know it hasn't been damaged from transit. I'm running it on a late 2005 Dell Dimension 5000 P4 3.4Ghz 800fsb with 1GB DDR2 RAM.

The problems (photos attached) started out of the box so I'll go through everything I did at various times over the past few weeks. As you can see I got an acceptable image once switched on (though very difficult to read file and menu options in Office and elsewhere without changing colour schemes) but then it scrambles into the overlapped image you see. The first thing I did was (1) replace the DVI cable = no change, (2) removed DVI and rebooted with VGA cable = no change, (3) ensured power cable was not wrapped around or near the DVI or VGA cables = no change, (4) believing my PC needed upgrading replaced the ATI graphics with an NVIDIA GeForce 7300LE 512 DDR card and upon rebooting this massively improved the onscreen colour and clarity but we were devastated when the same thing happened after 5 - 10 minutes. Finally (5) rebooted with DVI removed and through the VGA ran the Auto Adjust, which unfortunately left what you see on picture three. (6) Tried 1, 2 and 3 again = no change.

As of today (I'm disabled with a very busy life recently so combined 1 - 5 have been done over weeks) it boots up looking fine but within minutes it very quickly scrambles again.

All advice would be appreciated. I haven't been able to use the machine or my new study now since we moved in and given the circumstances, it's becoming very depressing :smileysad:. Thank you in advance.

Michael

Mcelroy44,

Turn the monitor off. Make sure the monitor power cord is plugged directly into the wall socket. No surge protector or APC. Connect only the VGA to the video card. The VGA and the DVI should never be connected at the same time to a single video card. Turn the monitor on and do the Auto Adjust again. Any difference?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply. No I never left both in together. But I did what you said and most regrattably there was no chang. The monitor started up okay but after 5 mins and opening a programme or even just up the file menu - any activity really - this happens again:

how about trying to get dell to send u a replacement monitor to test it out? it would eliminate the source of the problem.

Hi Chris - many apologies I couldn't check the machine before yesterday. My father has been quite ill and I've been out of the house. Thank you for all your help again. But safe mode also seems to be affected. Here's another photo to help.

Mcelroy44,

If you have a service tag number associated with your monitor, you may use Technical Support Chat/E-mail support to setup the monitor exchange. If you only have an Order number associated with the monitor, you must call in, 1-800-624-9896. They will need the following information -
20 digit PPID number on back of monitor
Name, address, phone, email
