S2715H, HDMI not getting a signal from computer

Just purchased a Dell S2715H monitor.

Computer runs Windows 10.

Graphic Card is NVIDIA GT 640.

I have the monitor up and running using a VGA connection but cannot get any signal with HDMI connection. All I see is moving box saying “Monitor will go into deep sleep within 5 minutes.” I can also press the monitor button in lower right and select between VGA and HDMI setup.

This is  first attempt to use HDMI setting with this computer. Are there Window’s startup settings that need to be changed?

Is there anything I should be seeing in Device Manager to acknowledge that computer can receive HDMI signal? (Yes, the computer does have a HDMI connection on the back.)

 Any advice will be appreciated.

You failed to mention the computer make and model? In many cases, if a discrete video card (Nvidia GT 640) is installed, you cannot use any of the built into the motherboard video out ports. List all of the out ports on the Nvidia GT 640. By the way, this monitors resolution maxes to 1920x1080 60Hz on both VGA and HDMI.

Chris, thanks for your response.

My computer is a no-brand model with an Intel Core i7 processor and a Intel BOXDZ77bh55k lga1155/intel z777/crossfireX&sli motherboard. The video card doesn’t have its own HDMi port.

If the monitor “resolution maxes to 1920x1080 60Hz on both VGA and HDMI” will I gain anything by taking time to establish a HDMI connection? Is it worth the effort? Would a change to the BIOS permit the HDMi slot on the motherboard to work?

Thanks again.

Once you open the OSD (On Screen Display) -Audio -Audio Source and change to HDMI, the left side headphone out jack should pickup the HDMI audio sent from the computer HDMI out. The S2715H also has an audio in port that connects directly to the computer audio out jack which would send audio to the left side headphone out jack. Being that the resolutions is the same for both VGA and HDMI, there is no gain to using HDMI except for audio input.
