S2715H, Mac Book Pro, OS 10.6.8, resolution issue

hello I have a Dell S2715Ht monitor connected to a macbook pro 2006 intel dual processor running os 10.6.8. It's connected via vga to the monitor. so far the best resolution i can get is 1280x960 which is restricted to 1280x800 (1:6). So I've noticed some reduction in screen resolution and image quality. I've tried customising the monitor settings in terminal on the mac - nothing's changed ().

I might be restricted by the mac's hardware.

How can I get the full 1920 x 1080 on the monitor? I'm using a DVI to VGA connection. Should I invest in a DVI to HDMI port, would this fix the problem?

Many thanks

Unfortunately, Dell does not test/validate this monitor model on Apple hardware, ports, and software.

It would be unwise for us to try to troubleshoot an operating system and hardware we did not validate on. You should post on the Apple Discussions Forum and see if they can offer some insight or troubleshooting steps.
