S2721DGF, GTX 1080, motion blur/ghosting

Hi guys,

I've come here to check a couple of things. I've recently replaced my fantastic S2417DG (TN 8 bits panel, HDMI 1.4/DP 1.2) with a larger S2721DGF (IPS 10 bits (8 bits + FRC) panel, HDMI 2.0/DP 1.4). I'm really loving the colors on this one, though I noticed that it has some heavy motion blur as opposed to my old monitor. Especially visible in games.

It is connected to a GTX 1080 with a DP directly into the screen. It's clocked to 165Hz with G-Sync and FreeSync on in the OSD.

What I tried:

  • Resetting to factory mode, through the panel itself, softMCCS and a hard reset
  • Fiddled with settings till I grew tired. This includes pretty much all OSD options, and preset modes
  • Ran a full broadside of tests on Blurbusters

Something I've noticed/concluded:

  • It seems that turning FreeSync Premium on/off doesn't seem to do anything other than making the screen turn black for a second or so. I don't notice anything different, also in the tests
  • It only has 'fast' as a baseline response time. Changing these settings around (super fast, extreme) doesn't seem to change anything noticeable.
  • Resetting through softMCCS didn't turn the screen black or gave me any indication of reverting something
  • I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with refresh rate (165Hz)
  • Some blurbuster tests show a high amount of motion blur/ghosting, especially clear in the Chase test: https://www.testufo.com/chase#background=404040&leading=ffffff&trailing=00ffff&distance=11&pps=960&height=180. It is a proper visible 11 pixels of motion blur. Also, very visible ghosting is on the Ghosting test.

I was wondering, is this something due to the fact I'm now looking at an IPS monitor with a lesser DPI, making it more apparent? Or is this not supposed to happen? It kind of ruins my gaming experience now that I've noticed it. I'm about to upgrade to a RTX 3080, so I'm hoping this solves it, but I wanted to research this in the meantime.

Help / insights are much appreciated!

Have a great day.

I just switched to a new computer, based on the 3080 RTX. The problem persists, sadly. I'm confused why I'm the only one that notices this, as no reviews report the blur and/or ghosting. I'll switch out DP cables later today, see if that helps.
