S2721QS, using on a GPU that only supports DisplayPort 1.0?

Hi,

I recently purchased the Dell 27 4K UHD Monitor - S2721QS

I was wondering if it's backward compatible with older GPUs. My gpu only supports DisplayPort 1.0 at 2560 x 1600 resolution.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help. I do get what you are saying. I really wanted a 4k monitor. The one I just purchased was on sale. My computer is soooo old (11 years).... and I didn't want to have to buy a brand new current computer. I am looking into this GPU...but I'm not sure if it will support my motherboard a Asus Rampage II Extreme.

@Cyclone_Chris  At least in theory, DisplayPort 1.0 has enough bandwidth to run 4K at 30 Hz rather than the standard 60 Hz, which might be what you're referring to when you say running a higher-resolution more slowly.  But 30 Hz is not an acceptable experience for most people, because even the mouse cursor becomes noticeably laggy.  But if your GPU is that old, it may have maximum resolution limitations stemming from factors beyond the amount of bandwidth available from its outputs.  Unfortunately you didn't specify your GPU model or system model.

As for running 2560x1440 instead, if you're going to do that, then you may as well have bought a 27" 1440p display in the first place.  All else being equal, it would have cost less AND would have delivered a superior image because the pixels of a 2560x1440 image do not map cleanly onto a 4K physical pixel grid, so you may see some scaling artifacts in that setup, especially with text, that wouldn't exist if you were sending a 2560x1440 image to a 2560x1440 physical pixel grid.

Otherwise, if this is a desktop, a basic GPU that has at least one DisplayPort 1.2 or 1.4 output (you only need 1.2 for 4K 60 Hz) isn't very expensive these days, so if you just spent good money on a 27" 4K display, you might want to think about spending a bit more to be able to use it properly.

@Cyclone_Chris  I think you'll be completely fine using that GPU in your system.  Yes it supports PCIe 3.0 while your motherboard only supports PCIe 2.0, but PCIe 3.0 cards are backward compatible with PCIe 2.0, and I wouldn't expect that to make much of a performance difference, if any, given the overall hardware picture.  Between an old CPU and a fairly low-performance GPU, the PCIe link speed just isn't going to be a factor.  And since it's a half-height, single-width GPU that doesn't have any auxiliary power connection requirements, you shouldn't have any problems with physical fitment or power supply requirements either.  And on the bright side, it supports DP 1.4a and HDMI 2.0b, which means the former should be able to run beyond 4K 60 Hz displays (well beyond if the display support DisplayPort DSC) and the latter would be able to run 4K 60 Hz as well, even with HDR if the display supports it.  So I'd encourage you to consider that upgrade.
