U2421E, single USB Type-C, multiple signals?
hello everyone, with this monitor is it possible to give multiple signals simultaneously with a single usb-c cable? audio, video, internet, 90w power supply?

in your opinion, if I make a basic use of it, can I charge it with my monitor with only 90w?
or the battery is ruined?
does the battery always want 130w for each use?

you are right, I would like to try to connect it to the monitor with a single cable and power it at 90w, but I don't know if the battery is damaged.
I would like to do some tests, but how can I tell if it works?
probably the computer works, but how can I tell if the battery is ruining and that the pc is not working well?

@aleangiulli I have already said that I would not recommend using an XPS 17 9700 while only a 90W power source is connected. I would be concerned about significant performance throttling and possibly increased battery wear, even if it didn't cause the battery to be "ruined". I don't really see the point of buying a relatively high performance system and then spending most of your time using it with an undersized power source. I would either connect the 130W power source to maintain normal performance levels or spend the extra money for a docking station if I really wanted to maintain the convenience of single cable connectivity. But you can always start out by connecting your XPS 17 9700 only to your display to see how it works when it only has a 90W power source. If you don't like what happens, you can always start connecting the 130W power source or buy the dock later on.

@aleangiulli I'm not sure how much more I can keep helping you at this point. You're not going to "damage" the battery by using the system with an undersized power source. Worst case you will create some additional wear and tear if the system draws more power from the battery than it would normally. Or the system might keep the battery draw consistent and address the power shortfall by throttling performance more. I just don't know. But if you're worried about battery longevity, then I would say that you probably shouldn't be buying a system that is designed to drain the battery even while connected to power when it is running heavy workloads. But I don't know if you'll be able to see how much more the battery is draining, at least not without performing some fairly long-term controlled tests that would probably not be practical.
In terms of determining whether your PC is not working well, you can try doing a certain type of work while the system is connected only to 90W power and then trying it again while it is connected to 130W power. See if there's a performance difference, and if so decide whether you're willing to accept the lower performance in order to avoid connecting the 130W power adapter or spending more money on a dock. Or you could run some benchmark utilities to perform controlled tests, but while those will be more consistent, they won't necessarily tell you what the difference will mean in terms of your real-world usage. And no, I do not have a specific performance benchmark to suggest for this, but you may be able to find something suitable with some research on your end.
I really don't think I can provide any more help than that.

thank you very much. one last thing, at this point I would like to buy a dockstation that makes the computer work well, and allows me to do everything with a single cable. on the dell website there are many docks, which one do you think can be good? thank you very much for your help

@aleangiulli Two good dock options for an XPS 17 9700:
The WD19S is a regular USB-C dock, so with your system it can run dual displays up to 1920x1200 each or a single display up to 2560x1440.
The WD19TBS is a Thunderbolt dock, so it can run dual displays up to 4K 60 Hz each or triple displays up to 2560x1440 each.

@aleangiulli Yes, "180W w/ 130W Power Delivery" means it comes with a 180W power supply and is capable of sending up to 130W to the attached system. The WD19S is also available as "130W w/ 90W Power Delivery", which is not what you want. The WD19TBS only comes as 180W w/ 130W PD.

how much current do they give? 180w or 130w?
I understand that the input is 180w and the output with usb-c is 130w?
then the pc is recharged with a maximum of 130w?

i dont know if it is ok for xps 17?

@aleangiulli That is designed for Precision 7000 Series systems that require that much power. If you connect it to the XPS 17 9700, it will operate in single connector mode even if both connectors are active, and in that mode it works like the regular WD19S, not even the WD19TBS. If the regular WD19S is enough for what you need, then you can save money by getting that instead, since the DCS will not offer any benefit. Or if you need Thunderbolt 3, get the WD19TBS, which will work better than the DCS with an XPS 17 9700.

ok, so for my xps 17 i can only use:
WD19S or WD19TBS, both 180w with 130w output.
they are equal?
the only difference is that the WD19S goes to 10gb, the WD19TBS goes to 40gb?

yes I read the difference, you were talking about attack with monitor.
but all the other attacks? only 10gb is enough for fullhd or 4K video, 1gb ethernet, audio, external ssd harddisk, etc??

@aleangiulli The 10 Gb is only for data that is carried over the USB channel. Video is carried over the DisplayPort channel, which is separate from USB data and not part of the 10 Gb. Yes, 10 Gb is enough for 1 Gb Ethernet, audio, and USB peripherals, especially since most USB peripherals only support 3.x Gen 1 (5 Gbps) to begin with. And even if you connected those peripherals directly to your system, if all of your system's USB ports are run by the same controller chipset, which is pretty typical on laptops, then you'd still only have 10 Gb total across all USB ports on the system, so it wouldn't matter if you connected them to the system or the dock.
With Thunderbolt, the PCIe and video signals are combined into a single Thunderbolt signal, so the 40 Gbps there is the total available bandwidth. I wrote an explainer post about USB-C and TB3 here if you're curious.

I transfer everything with usb-c cable.
Full HD or 4K video signal, audio, 1gb internet, printer, etc ... are all connected to the dockstation.
the dockstation must transmit everything with a single usb-c cable to the computer.
how can only 10gb be enough to transmit all the signals?
