U2711 will NOT enter power saving mode
Just received a Rev A11 U2711, manufactured in May 2012 in Mexico.
I've connected the monitor to two different Mac systems (one laptop, one desktop) via a DisplayPort-to-Mini DisplayPort cable for testing purposes, and when the Mac puts the monitor to "sleep" (set via the Energy Saver system preference), the U2711 simply flashes a "No DisplayPort Cable" message around the screen... forever. It never enters a "power saving" mode.
I've seen lots of posts from people about a problem where their U2711 would not "wake up" once it went IN to power saving mode, but this is the opposite problem: the display never even tries to "sleep". It just keeps saying "No DisplayPort Cable".
Looking for suggestions... having to manually control the monitor power via the power switch is not a solution; every other monitor I own/owned properly goes in to a "sleep" state (with the backlight OFF) and then automatically turns back on when the computer wakes up.

Bump.
Also, since my first port, I've also confirmed this problem with a Rev A07 U3011, also manufactured in May 2012 in Mexico.
When using the DisplayPort input, the monitors never enter "power save" sleep mode (where the power LED in the lower-right corner "throbs" yellow). Instead, it just displays the "No DisplayPort Cable" message with the monitor fully "powered up".

I wish I could help but we only validate the standard Mini-DP to DP adapter on Windows PCs. We do not test the apple mini-DP to DVI adapter nor do we test Dell monitors with apple platforms. We do not have any apple product in our labs. You should check the apple Discussions Forum for help from other apple users with our products.

You might try turning off DDC/CI in the monitor OSD (On Screen Display).
