U2713HM, U2715H, display issue

Question

Here is my configuration of a PC running Windows 10 =

GeForce GTX 960
Monitor 1 Dell U2715H – connected via an HDMI
Monitor 2 Dell U2713HM – originally connected via a DisplayPort cable

Today, monitor #2 stopped working. Black screen.

Resolution attempts:

Unplug and re-insert both ends of the DisplayPort cable. Did not help.
Located a replacement DisplayPort cable.
- Plugged that in. Did not help.
- Moved the plug to a different port in the card. Did not help.
Located a cable with HDMI and DVI plugs. Connected the DVI to the card, and the HDMI to the monitor. Used the buttons on the monitor to select HDMI input source, and that got the display to work.

One outstanding problem is that monitor 1 still runs 2560x1440, but monitor 2 is running 1920x1080. I look at the specs, and see that 1920x1080 is what is listed as the maximum, but I would swear that it was running higher resolution when the DisplayPort cable was in use. Is that possible? Could there be a difference in resolution caused by using the HDMI/DVI cable versus the DisplayPort cable? With regard to the original failure, and the fact that replacing the DisplayPort cable with a fresh (identical) cable did not help resolve the issue, is something functionally broken on the display?

Now, test the U2715H by itself using its DP in port, that same DP cable, and all of the DP out ports on the GTX 960. If the U2715H works, then the U2713HM DP in port is faulty. Replace it with another 2560x1440 60Hz monitor, or use the U2713HM HDMI 1920x1080 60Hz and the U2715H DP 2560x1440 60Hz.

I followed your procedure.

Powered off workstation and both monitors.
Disconnected monitor cables
connected displayport cable for the U2713HM - inserted one end into the monitor, the other into the card
powered back on.

All I see is "Entering power save mode". I tried moving the displayport cable to another port on the card, same results. No display.

I then powered back down, connected the HDMI cord for the U2715H so that I could report back to you.

What next please?

I removed the HDMI cable from the card, and connected the U2715H with a DP cable. Changed the input source to DP. Tried in all 3 DP ports. No love - that monitor won't come up using DP.

I then restored the HDMI cable to bring the U2715H back up.

So, the summary:

U2715H only works using HDMI cable. U2713HM is currently only working when I use the cable that has HDMI on one end, and DVI on the other.

I think what this may be revealing is that the card itself has the problem?

Looks that way. As a last step, if there were another PC there with DP out, I would test both monitors DP in ports on it. As far as troubleshooting this GTX 960, try this before getting a new video card =
* Turn the PC off
* Open the case
* Remove the GTX 960 from the motherboard slot
* Blow out all of the dust on the motherboard, slot, GTX 960
* Replace GTX 960 in slot
* Close case and retest
