U2713HM, can't adjust resolution, MacBook Pro

My configuration: Dell U2713HM connected to a MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB) using an Accell B143B-003J UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 cable

The monitor displays at full 2560x1440 resolution. The problem is that my eyes get REALLY tired when I look at a lot of text. I thought I could solve the problem by lowering the resolution when I have a lot of reading to do (as suggested by author of the TFT Central review of the U2713 at http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2713hm.htm.) However, this has not worked for me. The lower resolution is completely unusable because it is associated with a really low refresh rate (which I cannot find a way to change).

Here's how I lowered the resolution of the monitor:

- On my MacBook, navigated to Display under System Preferences.

- Changed the Resolution setting from "Best for display" to "Scaled". Three choices are now listed: 2560x1440, 1080i, and 720p.

- Selected 1080i.

- Immediately reverted back to 2560x1440 because of extremely bad display flicker.

My questions: How come TFT Central was able to lower the resolution on the U2713HM but I can't? (Quoting from their review:  "The screen is perfectly capable of being run at a lower 1920 x 1080 resolution if you wanted to, without much degradation in the picture quality and sharpness.") Is there another method to lower resolution that might give good results for my particular h/w and s/w configuration?

Dell has no idea how to do this on apple. Dell does not test/validate our monitors on apple proprietary hardware and software. Check the apple Discussions Forum and see what they say.

The U2713HM User's Guide states on page 12 that the 1920x1080 resolution is using 60Hz so there should not be a flicker. Press the U2713HM menu button. The bottom left should show  Resolution: 1920x1080@60Hz. You might try choosing 720p, then press the U2713HM menu button. What is listed for Resolution?

Believe me, I now fully understand that Dell doesn't support its monitors with Apple computers. Funny that I discovered this after I bought the monitor, despite extensive research before the purchase. Anyway, thanks very much for your interest, and here's what I found when I did what you suggested:

1. I chose 1080i (Mac System Preferences > Displays) and looked at the information under the U2713HM's menu button. Here's what's given: 1080i. That's it. No Hz value.

2. Chose 720p. Under the monitor's menu button: 1280x720@60Hz.

Terrible flickering at 1080i. No flickering at 1280x720 but the display is unusable: fonts are too big and very blurry.

Any further ideas?

I doubt that the TFT reviewer was testing on a laptop. Most likely a desktop with a good video card. But his review does not specify.

The monitor can do 1080i:

The monitor can do 1920x1080, but 1280x720 is not listed:

Maybe remove the Accell B143B-003J from the mix and try testing in this way to see if the mac mode 1080i looks better:

MacBook Pro Thunderbolt out --> miniDP to DP cable --> U2713HM DP in
