U2720Q, sometimes powers on when plugged in

To be more specific, when I power up my APC UPS to which the U2720Q monitor is connected to, it sometimes powers on, but no always.

This occurs before ever booting the then HDMI-connected laptop (XPS 9700), which is now connected over Thunderbolt only, since it was required for a firmware update and b/c it's now running at 60 Hz.

Is this damaging in away? That is, does the UPS initially spike when turned on?

I'm concerned that the monitor's power circuit may be being exposed to unhealthy jolts of current b/c of it's "opened" state, where as this would not occur if it was "closed". I think this could result in premature failure due to undue stress.

Twice today the monitor has gone black, with the power button led remaining steadily lit. The first time it came back on it's own, but on the second I had to cycle power with button presses. I have just updated the driver and firmware, so hopefully this may help with the black screen.

Note: Was purchased brand new from Dell and has had light usage
Note: Monitor is plugged into a surge protection socket, not a battery backup one
Note: Was HDMI connected until today, since I'm weary of the additional 90 W over TB3

In attempt to prevent this, I have tried

• Pressing the power button before powering the UPS
• Two quick power button presses in successions
• A single long power button press
• Two successive long power button presses

I do power it off every night, after the connected laptop shuts down and the monitor goes into power-saving mode (a powered off, standby state, with a slowly pulsing led). I suppose I could try powering it off before going into standby as well.

Also, it seems that the longer it goes without use the less likely it is to power on with the UPS.
