U3219Q, chime noise, MacBook Pro 2019

I experience the same issue - in sleep mode MacBook Pro plays chime sounds every 3-10 seconds until I unplug the U3219Q. Even if I wake up MacBook Pro, it still cannot see the U3219Q but chime notifications continue.

- Fully charged Apple MacBook constant "charm" power chime noise due to waking and sleeping
- The monitor might display, "Scanning for Signal"

Is my U3219Q similar to these (U3419W, U3818DW) in this article?

I've reset the U3219Q several times as instructed, also I reinstalled macOS, still the issue persists.

Two weeks since I wrote the first post. Any updates?

In the meantime I got different macbook pro 2019 (2 thunderbolts) and the issue persists, I am getting these chime notifications from time to time. I tried to work with my other monitor (Lenovo) that also has USB-C power delivery and had no issues for a long time of using it with both notebooks

Thank you sharing the video. Could you please confirm if you are using the type C cable that came with the monitor?  As per the specification U3219Q 90 W power delivery.

wer234wer,

All we know is that the other two models did have the "chime" issue with macOS 10.14.3 and 10.15.4. Perhaps roll back to a previous macOS version. You should also start a new thread on the Apple Forum. This way other Apple users with the U3219Q can post their troubleshooting.

@DELL-Jesse L I appreciate the advice. I had three different apple notebooks with that issue with just one monitor, so it seems highly unlikely that the issue is in notebooks' hardware. Rolling back software seems not the optimal solution too for several reasons:

1. It is not safe to use an old software. In addition, one of the notebooks was provided by my employer and IT policy demands I use the latest version of software and OS.

2. Dell claims U3219Q compatibility. U3219Q is in the list of "Supported Dell UltraSharp monitors with USB-C for Mac systems". That's the reason I ask Dell to investigate the well-documented erratic behavior with different apple notebooks.

wer234wer,

Please check this article

You can follow the steps to troubleshoot MacOS Power Chime when connected to U3419W or U3818DW monitor

Your monitor is different model, but still you can give it a try.

Hope you can find this information helpful,

Kind regards,

@DELL-Cares: "You can follow the steps to troubleshoot MacOS Power Chime when connected to U3419W or U3818DW monitor"

Thank you for the answer. The advice in the article is not directly relevant, because as you can see from the videos I experience issues in both sleep and wake modes, and article only addresses sleep mode issues (unplug cable etc). The only two applicable advices are update drivers (which I already did) and keep the notebook connected to the power adapter from apple (which defies the logic of having U3219Q delivering power over USB-C to free up other port).

It would be great if you could look into my issue further.

@DELL-Cares  I refuse to accept the answer your are sending me in private messages. I just proved that three different mac notebooks erratically cannot connect to Dell U3219Q monitor (that is claimed to work with mac) I am making it public here and I will make sure I will make it public in other forums with dell monitors. Current and future owners of dell should know how Dell does not support its own products and misleads customers.

Dell refuses to support mac systems for monitors that are shown on Dell's website as supported to work with mac.

Here is our exchange in private messages.

Our monitor manufacturer lab tested the U3219Q (M3B101, M3B107), U3818DW (M3B106), and U3419W (M3B107) on macOS Catalina 10.15.5 and did NOT have the Power Chime noise. What macOS version are you running?

11.0 Big Sur = unknown
10.15.5 Catalina = no chime
10.15.4 Catalina = chime
10.14.3 Mojave = chime
10.13.6 High Sierra = no chime
10.12.6 Sierra = no chime
