Backing up SQL/Exchange Databases

Can someone help me out, I know it's something basic, but networker will not backup databases including SQL and Exchange because they are in use by another process. Can anyone please tell me how they back up their exchange and SQL using networker.

Are you talking about online backup here? If yes, I don't remember seeing that error with online backup. When doing a file system backup of the SQL and MSEXCH databases then you must make sure those are not online (not running in this case or they have data dumped somewhere to be backed up).

It sounds to me like you are not using the SQL module to back it up and attempting the back the database while it is online. If you do not have the SQL module ensure you have stopped your SQL database prior to backing it up.

If you are using the SQL module please let us see the exact errors we are seeing in the logs.

Ok so let me ask this then, because maybe I am incorrectly backing it up. How should I performing an online backup. I loaded the Exchange and SQL agent on the respective boxes, but I configured the clients through the Networker Management Console. I am using Networker 7.3

On each box you must install module for its database (eg. Exchange module and SQL module), configure client resource for backup with modules (saveset and backup command) and of course license for module will be required too. You can find more in module documentation.

Check that you have configured a client which lists the relevant saveset (for example MSEXCH: MSSQL:) and that you have entered the relevant save command (nsrxchsv nsrsqlsv) in the save command field. My guess from what you are telling us is that you are backing up the file system.

Does this command nsrxchsv in networker 7.3 go under the apps & Modules tab, under backup and in the backup command box or under the save set. in the save set I have set for all.

Bruno, I'm afraid you will need to read documentation. Without knowing what to do you may do something wrong. Actually, someone can tell you to do something wrong and you will be the one to blame for the finaly result then.

With that in mind, if you go to documentation for module there is always part which describes how to define client resource and tell you exactly what to do. You should read it - it is only one or maybe two pages (wide fonts plus pictures).

Logic is - the backup command command goes to backup command filed.

In saveset you list your saveset - saveset All is for file system backups. Module backups have specific savesets and can be global or specific to database (some part of database for example). For Exchange top saveset is MSEXCH: (for those others; specific ones and their roles see documentation - everything is there described very well).
