Software Compatibility Guide mentions Windows 2008 All editions, which refers to Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, DataCentre, etc, but not Windows 2008 R2.
It only mentions Windows 2008 R2 when it comes to Exchange 2010, but in that case, it points you to the use of the binary nsr_exchange2010, which works only with Networker Client, no additional modules are required.
Regarding the error message, could you please attach the entire output of the nsrsnap_vss_save output? Actually you can extract those lines form the nmm.log.
Please take a look at it again. This guide is divided in the different applications NMM can backup.
When it sais Windows 2008 R2 all editions, it's related only to the bakcup of Exchange 2010, as stated already and, if you look at the 10 foot note:
10 Use the NetWorker Exchange 2010 Plugin, see the Microsoft Exchange 2010 Backup and Recovery Support with EMC NetWorker Technical Note on Powerlink
So again, NMM does not support Windows 2008 R2.
You have my email, if you still have some questions bout it please don't hesitate to drop me an email and I'll be delighted to clarify that for you, but I would say let's focue on the main issue.
Please past in here the output of the NMM.log and I'll take a look, if you wish, despite the environmnet is not supported.

Hello Bernd,
This is a known issue, and usually comes up after uninstallation of some software.
You can clean out the registry, or create a dummy file, as per the following solution:
http://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg104867
However please note that NMM 2.2 SP1 does not support Windows 2008 R2 Operating Systems.
Let us know if that helps.
Thank you.
Carlos.

NMM221 supports W2k8R2 accoring to the compat guide. May be not with Hyper-V. But Hyper-V works.
I know esg104867. But this does not apply. Rather some service blocks the registry. I would like to know
how to find out what blocks the snap of SYSTEM COMPONENTS.
regards
Bernd

Hello Bernd,
I would like to have your compat guide. In my latest version NMM2.2.1 is not suppported for W2K8R2.
Regarding the problem, to debug this I suggest to deep dive into VSS.
Regards, Holger

Nice discussion. In my compat guide (09/30/10) W2k8R2 is supported (page 65, Windows x64, Windows Server 2008 R2 (all editions)).
I don't know how to read it. But for me exchange 2010 is just an application. Futhermore I have no idea how to use nsr_exchange2010.exe as
backup command with nmm.

Bernd, you are right. Some if not all of the 2010 SCG state Windows 2008 R2 in NMM 2.2.1
Both 2011 SCG does not.
This now clear I have still no other hint, from my point of view he need a way to dive into VSS.
