Compare Features

Hi All,

Our organization is going to setup a new Data Centre. They have asked me to suggest the backup tool to be used. I had suggested them NetWorker. But now since other vendors provide backup tools with much less cost, I have to justify them with the proper compare list.

Can anyone suggest me where can I found a good compare list with which I can convince my managers to implement NetWorker.

Regards,

AIX, Linux, Windows, Oracle, Exchange and SQL are very well known to most of the backup software companies. I guess your best chances to prove Nw is better will come from Vmware intregration (some nice new features in Nw 7.6), and the snap modules for Symmetrix. I suggest you to look for Nw features/modules related to these products, see if you need those features, and check if any other competitors can do the same.

If possible, try to set deduplication as a priority to cost reduction, Avamar will turn Nw into a winner strategy.

Hi,

There is a PowerLink site where you can find comparatives between EMC and other vendors, maybe it could be useful for you:

https://powerlink.emc.com/nsepn/webapps/btg548664833igtcuup4826/km/appmanager/km/secureDesktop?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=default&internalId=0b014066803ec30d&_irrt=true

There are articles regarding CommVault and Symantec two of the NetWorker competitors.

Also i have to say that if you are installing the backup in a Windows servers environment i would prefer installing CommVault, if you are installing in a more heterogenious environment (solaris, windows, linux, hpux... servers) i would install NetWorker.

Regards.

Hi Guevara,

I checked the link but reached a page saying access violation. Since I have only customer login in Powerlink, I think I do not have permission to open the document.

Can u please send me the document through mail.

Hi,

Is not a document is an entire category, you should find it in the PowerLink home site under search field in the right you can find "competition" click and you will see "Competitors List".

I tried but again I am not able to see Copetition option. I think the option is only available to EMC people or Channel partner login

Yes, Competition is only available using partner login (or as EMC employee I guess). There's a lot of features to compare, and probably Nw advantages can be better highlighted if your environment could be verified. Is there EMC or EMC's partner sales people that could help you? I bet they can spend some time trying to come up with a winner strategy for installing Netwoker in your new data centre. It's exactly what they're paid for

But if that's not an option, try to give us a brief description of what you're planning to backup, then we can try to point what are Nw's advantages.

Hi Daniel,

In our organization the whole IT infra is being provided by a third party company. We have to let them know which product we have to use and then they will do all the procurement.

The new DC will have follwoing infra:

IBM P series high end servers: 10 (Each will have 10 LPARs) with AIX

ESX servers: 8 (Will be in two cluster, each cluster will have 30 VM machines, Around 20 VM machines will be LINUX based and remaining 40 will be Windows 2008)

Symmetrix as Storage is already finalized with 150 TB capacity.

Quantum Scalar i500 Tape Library with 6 LTO 4 tape drives and 128 Slots is already procured.

Oracle Database servers: 9 ( 3 cluster each with three nodes)

Exchange Servers: 8

SQL Servers: 10

We want to utilize VCB backup technology for 35 VM machines (Each will have a max data size of 60 GB). Other VM machines has to be with host based backup.

All the databases and mail servers should be backed up through online modules.

Please suggest us.
