Here you go. You can find this in the NetWorker compatibility guide. I don't think you might get a better document than this but in case some has saved an older compatibility guide then you might be in luck.

Old clients are not unusual. Be careful if you think about updates - I would not recommend that as their compatibility is not listed any longer. Unfortunately, EMC does not keep old issues of the compatibility guide (at least not for the customers).

On the other hand, as company you cannot support every combination and test this forever.

'Compatibility' means 'tested and approved - it does not mean that other combinations will not work.

AFAIK, Legato designed the NW client software in a way that the interactivity was guaranteed to work.

And i think this is still the case with EMC.

I know a customer who until recently had to keep one very old machine/application with a NW 6 client software.

He had no problems with this client backing up to a NW server running on 8.x.

Of course a client can only support what his version is capable of. Old clients do not support later features.

And the old authentication (oldauth) still works - so this is not an issue.

With respect to client push updates - AFAIR this has been implemented in 7.4.1. So be very careful in selecting the clients for this process. And before you even start, I recommend you run the NW Health Check Tool (available from support) to verify all prerequisites. Even if they fit you will experience a bunch of obstacles with the update procedure which are currently in the process to be solved.

Good luck.

I know some probs regarding oldauth / nsrauth in conjunction with NetWorker 8.x server and 6.x/7.x clients and some save(fs) parameters changed, e.g. with "Client Direct"... Thats why I asked for a kind of matrix.

The server I have to update is running NSR version 7.6, clients are running versions from 6.1 via 7.1, 7.2, 7.4 upto 7.6. I know I have to initiate an update of NetWorker clients, but this process is not as fast with about 800 clients.

True, i have already falled a prey of the upgrade. in my cause it was the older openssl on the server that caused my nsrd to crash often without any errors. Ensure that your server has all the latest patched installed.
