Exchange 2010 backup with NMM 2.3
Hi,
Can anyone help me out with Exchange 2010 DAG backup configuration with NMM 2.3 ? I am new to Networker and am not familiar with snapshot technology. Hence i am finding it difficult to understand the related documents.
Please help me out asap.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Pratik.

In my case, when setting up Exchange NMM backup, I had to restart Exchange server in order to delete snapshots. Deleting snapshots using "diskshadow" sometimes does not work (don't know why). Also, ensure you have at least Exchange 2010 rollup 4.

Hi,
Make sure you have created and selected snapshot policy on the group properties.
1)Create a Snaphot value with name serverless under snapshot policies with following values
Number of Snapshots=1
Retain Snapshot=0
Snapshot Expiration Policy= Day
Backup Snapshot= ALL
2)Enable the Snapshot policy on the group properties and selected the Serverless backup policy
Please refer the KB article link for more details.

Hi,
I have two Exchange servers in DAG and i am trying to configure a Backup using NMM 2.3 of the server with passive database (standalone backup). I can see that the backup is happening but in the end it fails with the following errors:
MSExchangeRepl
2038
Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer backup failed. No log files were truncated. Instance 80b7e05e-4aea-4d22-9003-2a9e59087429. Database f0cb5ea0-f5f7-42a8-8ce9-b8fa246e9598.
MSExchangeRepl
2034
The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance 80b7e05e-4aea-4d22-9003-2a9e59087429) failed with error FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event.
These errors seem to be related to MS Exchange or Windows.
Please help me out with the same.
Regards,
Pratik.

Hey Pratik,
This sounds to me as a known Microsoft issue. There was a fix for Exchange 2007:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982118
But event 2034 from VSS is definitely a Microsoft issue:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Exchange&ProdVer=8.0&EvtID=2034&EvtSrc=MSExchangeRepl&LCID=1033
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Exchange&ProdVer=8.0&EvtID=2034&EvtSrc=MSExchangeSA&LCID=1033
However I would recommend you to install and run NMM Config Checker, and this will let you know if all required OS and VSS related patches are in place.
Thank you.
Carlos.

What about if you try only the saveset for the MDB and skip the PF for testing purposes? or does the MB DB also have the logs in the same path as the DB?
Saveset should be:
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010\Mailbox Database 1114983022
Thank you.
Carlos.

Hi Pratik,
As you can see in the output you don't have any PF created, and that is a requirement:
Warning
PUBLICFOLDER_ONE_DB_CONFIGURATION_CHECK
No Public Folder databases were found in the domain. For RSG item-level browsing, there must be at least one Public Folder database.
Besides, if you intend to perform restores you will need to address these ones:
Fail
USER_SEND_AS_RECEIVE_AS_CHECK
username = administrator@mahagov
The user credentials entered do not have Send-As and Receive-As permissions.
Fail
LIBRARY_VERSION
The Library Messaging API and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1, Version: "Not Available" is installed. Install version[6.5.8211.0] or above of the program.
Anyway, could you please sender nmm.raw and paste here the output?
Thank you.
Carlos.

Hi Pratik,
I forgot to mention this other failure:
Fail
NETWORK_ADAPTER_STATUS
ERROR: Network adapters which can be used for NMM backup operations, are not detected.
Check if any network adapters are [installed | media-connected | not-disabled].
Please check the status of the Network Adapters.
Thank you.

Hi Carlos,
The NMM Config checker was run again on the exchange hosts with the Administrator credentials. Previously, since it was tested with local admin credentials, we got the USER_SEND_AS_RECEIVE_AS_CHECK error. But that has been solved this time. Also the public folder is present on the other server which is being used as exchange host (active) now. Only the LIBRARY_VERSION issue is yet to be resolved. Just wanted to ask you whether it is mandatory to update The Library Messaging API and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 to 6.5 .
Please let me know about the same.
Regards,
Pratik.

Hi Pratik,
Send as-Receive as permissions are only required for restore operations, not really to perform backups.
Are you still getting any error message during the backup? If so, what is that error message? Please render nmm.raw and paste in here the output.
Thank you.
Carlos.
