IBM tape library TS2900 - NDMP option
Our configuration is as follows...
Windows 2008/Networker 7.6.3/IBM Tape library TS2900 with single SAS drive.
Can we use NDMP option with this tape library?
I may add we have two NetApp filers 2050 and 2240 (ONTAP 7.6.x and ONTAP 8.x)

Hi Sks20,
Is your question about HW compatibility or about performance?
I think this is compatible, however having a single drive (one only tape) to backup 2 NAS I don't think is the best approach because of the amount of data contained in the NAS would be much higher (I guess) that the tape capacity.
Thank you.
Carlos.

I'd agree with Carlos on this, if your tape drive is an LTO5 you have a possible 9x3TB=27TB capacity in your library which may be less than the capacity of your filers as you haven't stated their capacity. Running the drive at theoretical maximum speed it would take you 27 hours to fill these tapes up (not recommended to use drive constantly!) so you may well be able to run a full backup over a weekend but you have left yourself little breathing space. However, I would also assume there is non-NDMP in your environment being backed up, since it is not possible to back this data up simultaneously with the one drive you may well find your system is a little underspecced.

Thanks everyone for their helpful comments!
My concern is compatibility rather than performance. We do not intend to backup all volumes on the NetApp's, just the super critical ones. So
size is not an problem.
In the past I have configured fiber attached tape drives with NDMP. However, was/am not sure if a SAS tape drive will also
work with NDMP.
Also, noting the comments above a single drive...yes..we intend to get a dual drive tape library some time in the future...
Thanks & Regards

If NA box is SAS ready then you should not have issues, but this is more question of compatibility between NAS box and SAS interface. Check now.netapp.com for compatibility. Worst case scenario is that it is not where in such case you would present tape to server or storage node (assuming SAS compatibility would be there) and do NDMP DSA backups.

thanks...I will know soon enough. We have asked for a NDMP quotation for Networker. Once it's approved, I will install and test and let you guys know...
