Hi,

I think you have all the answers already. There is no need to use VCE license here, as you are installing NW client on each host but if you did purchase those licenses, just read again Bobby's post, where he explains how to do it:

You can license this with a Virtual Edition Client Connection License - one per physical host.  You tick the 'virtual' box in the client configuration and you put the name of the physical host in the physical host field.  This will allow you to have an unlimited number of LPARs on one license.   For more details, have a look at the NetWorker Licensing Guide p. 35.

In easy understandable words:

Install networker client in all hosts.

Configure backup for each host

add license for each host

Then run a backup.

thank you.

Carlos.

Hi,

I'm not an expert on AIX, but if your question is how to backup the virtual partitions, if there is a file system on them you should be able to back them up normally.

I think having further information about your environment would help much more

Are you goinf to use LPAR for VM's, if so I think the only option would be to install NetWorker client in the VM's within the LPAR, as I don't know of any other option.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi,

As Carlos said, you just need to install the NetWorker software into the LPAR as you would with any other machine.  The only thing you need to look out for is that if you want to use the LPAR as a Storage Node connected to a tape library, then you need to have a dedicated HBA for each LPAR.  You cannot share the HBA between LPARs.

So, i should only install networker on each partition ? or in the physical machine ?

How netwoker will backup the virtualised machine ? is their any specified saveset ?

Hi,

NetWorker client should be installed on the each partition \ virtualised machine. NetWorker will be treating each virtualised client as physical machine, So it will backup in the same ways as normal NetWorker Client.

Thanks

Panwar.

Hi,

Check out the NetWorker Installation Guide for full details on how to install NetWorker in AIX.  This is what you will need to do in each LPAR.

Hi,

No need for virtual edition as you are going to install NetWorker client on each host (VM), so for NetWorker that counts as a physical client.

Thank you.

Ok so i install a networker client on the IBM AIX server and activate VEC licence in it. And on the LPAR I should install another client binary to backup them or networker server will use the client that is installed on the IBM AIX server to backup LPARs ?

You login into each LPAR machine and install client package. From there you use smitty as described in installation guide. Do you have access to documentation on Powerlink?
